Our main printer is an HP LJ6, circa 1996 (?).
I've gone through several toner cartridges.
I think I had it rebuilt about 10 years ago, cost about 100 bucks.

Then my brother gave me 2 boxed toner cartridges and another LJ6 !!!
They were tossing them at work, don't know if the printer works, but I have spare parts.

I have a lexmark all in one color, I did put new cartridges in it once, but if you don't use it regularly they dry out.
It's not even hooked up now, I mainly use it for the scanner.

I hate ink jets.
If you need color look for the ones that use solid pellets, they don't dry out.
But they are pricey.

I've been using one of these for the last ~8 years. Has done around 50,000 pages. Uses ink cartridges that are bigger than my pinky finger.

Funny, that's what the typewriter service guys were saying to his pals at the Radio/VCR/TV repair shop . . . or was it the place that rebuilt carbs . . . I don't remember.
