Forget the earthquake, watch out for the hurricane

Forcasters say ~ 100 MPH wind and rain on Sunday for NJ.

Good, maybe it will clean things up a bit

Kidding aside, what a run of bad luck. Getting butts kicked here too in the Midwest by tornadoes and severe storms.

My sister planned a weeks vacation at the family's summer place at the Jersey shore....08204..For (mostly) better or worse, the house is half block from the ocean, about 200 yards from mean high water.

So I called her in NOVA this morning and told her of the prospects of house flooding in basement..almost a certainty imo, and the prospect of potential mandatory evacuation of shore towns. In a town as PC as Cape May, it's 50/50 odds of mandatory evacuation.
"Have you thought of staying in Va. until Monday? "
"No. We are coming today", and her son and his family are also coming for a visit from another direction with kids ages 2,4,6.

So I do a little digging on the web and paste forecasts from the County site, Accuweather, and the NHC at NOAA and send her an email. High winds, and new moon high tides. and LOTS of rain in the forecast are going to make for a mizzerable, if not dangerous, weekend. I send her an email including this:.

Thursday morning
FROM ACCUWEATHER
"Sandy Hook to Cape May, N.J.
The eyewall of Irene will pass close by Sunday morning, with full hurricane effects expected. Weather conditions will deteriorate Saturday into Saturday evening with wind and rain increasing. Periods of heavy rain, damaging hurricane-force winds (80-95 mph) and serious coastal and back bay flooding will occur Saturday night and Sunday. Expect significant beach erosion with a storm surge averaging 2 to 4 feet, but locally it can be higher. Waves will top seawalls late Saturday night into Sunday morning."
http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/54158/hurricane-irenes-impacts-on-ea.asp

Her terse reply to me was : K & T are leaving today and should be there at 11:00 am. We are leaving for Cape May at 1:00 pm.

Now, she's a smart woman, Ivy league educated and all, but she has too long lived in NoVa and has become too liberal in her thinking. She has lost most if not all of her common sense., imo

Oh well! Stupid is as stupid does.

Very concerned...Any storm surge will destroy my parents' retirement home which they have put innumerable work, time, and money to have. Hoping for the best. I'm going to park my car dead square in the middle of the university parking garage, well out of reach of any flying branches or beer cans.

I hope all of the members in the path fair the storm safely. Sometimes the after effects are more bothersome, no electric, water and such. Remember Cash is King. No Electric = no banks, no credit cards, no ATM's

Tom,

Are they in OC? Does their town have any seawall or dunes between the beaches and development?

FYI.....

The hatches have been battened. Debating whether or not to put my boat in the shed here at work or just leave it in the backyard (not sure if trees will come into play or not) but it's somewhat of a relief knowing that I don't have to worry about any boats in the water.

The weather dudes are in full-panic mode. Looks like it might get exciting.

Nah they are up in ct, a really small place back from the beach (on a marsh actually) but my father recently put an addition on almost singlehandedly working the last few years along with my brother and I. looks beautiful. I think it's something around 8-10 feet above sea level so it's a crapshoot...long island might buffer some of it if they're lucky but storm surges usually don't work like that. The eye is predicted to pass almost directly over them.

Don't know why I thought they lived in Jersey? I guess because you get down here frequently. But I know you're fm Ct. Duh!

Trouble on the way...

Wow, good luck!! I did hear Christie already declared state of emergency today. Hopefully the traffic will move at least a little bit.

Yeah it should be fun, I think I'm all set:

Food, check
Gas for generator, check
Bullets, check
water, check
Rum, whiskey, and scotch, check.
Cigars, check.
Filled up tank, check.
Plywood to board up windows, check.
Spray paint to put, "looters will be shot" on said plywood, check.

Wonder if I'm forgetting anything?
