Let's not get carried away. Poverty in Mexico is dirt floors and prostitution. Poverty in this country is cable TV, 2000+ calories a day, and brand new pair of Nike's.

DEFINITION: Child poverty index is defined as the share of the children living in the households with income below 50% of the national median.

Because your USA household has low income does not mean you are the same situation as say a Mexican child who is in the same statistical group. "Never mind then" is a good response until the/a report shows a apple to apples type of conclusion with the appropriate figures included. Right now you could measure children living in Manhattan on 5th ave against a kid in Louisiana and the report may say the kid living in a bayou shack was not in poverty and the kid in Manhattan apt was.

Hard thing to universally define I suspect. If a child is always hungery and cold in the winter I have to imagine he or she qualifies.

You don't need to read charts; buy a plane ticket to any third world country, walk around for a few days, then come back and report on our horrible poverty issues. Our poverty is nothing like their poverty.

And yet Kip posts this stuff like it's all doom and gloom for our future. Perhaps your future is miserable, but mine is not.

One afternoon a wealthy Republican was riding in his shiny limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate the situation.

He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"

"We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We HAVE TO eat grass."

Shocked, the Republican said, "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you!"

"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."

"Bring them along," the Republican replied.

Turning to the other poor man he said, "You come with us, too."

The second man said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!"

"Bring them all!" the Republican answered. They all jammed into the huge limo.

Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the Republican and said, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you."

Genuinely touched, the Republican replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place; the grass is almost a foot high!"

Some people think that throwing children in a fire is wrong but throwing fire out of an airplane on children is somehow justifiable.

If you think that problem children do not grow up to be problem adults, good thinking, and bless your hearts. ('cause your brains are beyond saving.)

Those of you who think that poverty by any definition is fine enough for children should be sterilized, lobotomized, and should stop voicing your opinions. I think that is fine enough for you.
