Yup. I'm intrigued, though. It'd be tempting at 50ish mpg.

Around town, this Cruze is noisy. The fuel injectors click with authority and volume. Europeans don't seem to mind that much, but Americans will hold their nose up at it like a Frenchman looking at processed cheese. No doubt, this will be addressed.
It wouldn't phase me a bit.

Sitting here reading this makes me wonder if someone has been doing what they can to keep these type cars out of the US to try to make the hybrids looks better?

possibly, of course BMW is airing their television ads attempting to paint the W123 as "dirty, smelly and noisy".

Yes, that might be possible.

I spent lots of time in Europe in the early 2000's. The diesels they had there were amazing and I'm sure they're much better now. They were so good that when it came time to fuel up a rent car, I had to make sure whether it took Benzin or Diesel.

As far as a Chevy, I don't care what it has for a power plant I'm not interested. With the government bail out, it'll be a cold day in you know where before I buy a GM or Chrysler product.

Well, when I have to make a decision as to which car I want here, it isn't as simple as it looks. You can't simply ship the thing over and let it go. There are a lot of other factors. You'd have to make it compliant with the local regulations, provide parts and support, market it, etc, etc. Sure, if it is just a matter of loading it up in a boat, send boat over, owner pick it up and never seen again, fair enough. Do you remember the Merkurs that were brought over? The XR4Ti came over from 85-89 and the Scorpio came over from 88-89. Doesn't mean squat that they stopped selling them. They had to provide parts for so long, manufacture them, etc, etc. The impression I get is that people think it is a "Just Do It" thing and there are no consequences for that action.

So now I have to have a multi-year commitment even if I decide at the end of 2 or 3 years, it is a bust. What will YOU, the customer offer? Will you pick up the tab? I think not. Look at your diesel pump for instance. Compared to the gas pumps, the diesel area is a 3rd world country. Fewer pumps unless you are at a truck stop, can't always get diesel but can get gas, even when you get diesel, the pumps are few and dirty, fuel gelling is a concern, price fluctuates wildly (can be 15 cents between locations less than a mile apart), etc, etc. A hybrid uses gas and can easily get fuel anywhere. If I bought another car it will be gas. I put up with the diesel only because I had to drive long distances of 200 miles a day. Now I don't so it becomes less tolerable.

I have news for you. Even compared to the newer diesels it is dirty, smelly and noisy. It might have been good FOR IT'S TIME even ahead of it's time when it came out, but today, it is nothing. Ahead of your time in history does not mean it compares favorably today.

I like my W123 for many reasons, one of which it is noisy and smelly. When some a** is tailgating me, I blip the throttle and watch as the tailgater rapidly changes lanes trying to avoid the diesel exhaust. I like having that big mass of an engine block under the hood knowing if someone hits me I at least have a fighting chance of survival.

In the event of a head on collision, the engine is not going to drop down and slide under the car, instead it is going to protect me from the ricer who is trying to inflict pain and injury upon my person. Give me a big smelly noisy diesel and I'm happy.

I also like going down the road at 70MPH and hearing that big five cylinder breathing fire, at least the car has PERSONALITY.

Its a big deal over here. I don't know how many "economy" diesels you have over in Aus but all that has really caught on across the pond is some german diesels and the big diesel hauler trucks. The fact that an American automaker has put out a diesel car is a HUGE deal since the last time the Americans put out a diesel it was an enormous flop (80s caddies and oldsmobiles) and were crappy cars to begin with. The VW and MB diesels have almost a cult following (small but very dedicated here) but the mainstream consumer almost never considers it. I'd actually be very interested in hearing about the diesel market in Australia--its almost a car market that we don't hear about in the states aside from the Pontiac G8 which is a rebadged Holden. BTW, I am really looking forward to the Bathurst 1000 this weekend, its a race I've always wanted to see but this is the first time its been televised in my area I'll have to DVR it though since I'll be at Chadfest 2011 yappin it up with the fellow MB nuts

Considering diesel fuel costs 10% more than regular unleaded in most US markets, add to that the expensive diesel engine option... whats the point? The gasser already does 42mpg on the highway. How much more money are you going to save with a diesel? We're talking about GM rental build quality here not an OM617.
