Okay, I'm a college graduate, I read the whole thing, and I still don't know what Reid just did or what the effect will be. Does anyone care to break it down for me?

In a shocking development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) triggered a rarely used procedural option informally called the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules.

Reid and 50 members of his caucus voted to change Senate rules unilaterally to prevent Republicans from forcing votes on uncomfortable amendments after the chamber has voted to move to final passage of a bill.

Reid’s coup passed by a vote of 51-48, leaving Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) fuming.

The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had been a humdrum knife fight over amendments to China currency legislation.
Did Democrats just grow a pair? Good!

Ah, government can now move forward without regard to common sense anymore.

REID: (knuckles dragging) "Filibuster bad! Me now be able to go home. Sleep."

COMMON SENSE:

(Note: Nothing to be said.)
(Unless, of course, you love Harry!)

The short version.....

The Republicans wanted to bring up the Obama Jobs Bill for a vote in the Senate. But first they wanted to fill it with riders that would make it impossible for anyone to vote on. This would give the Republicans the chance to crow: "Obama's Jobs Bill was voted down in the Senate. Not even the Democrats voted for it!"

Problem.... The Democrats filled all the bills rider slots before the Republicans had a chance to add any. This is known as 'filling the tree'. Therefore the bill could be voted on and there was a good chance it would pass. Not a 100% chance, but a chance and it was one the Republicans could not take.

Solution..... Republicans Filibuster bill giving them time to figure out what to do since they had not moved fast enough to get their bill killing riders attached to the Jobs Bill.

So.... The Republicans passed this by the rules keepers in the Senate to make sure they had everything legal. If they could not get the headline they wanted they would see to it that the bill was just filibustered until they could get the next best headline: "Democrats dither while country suffers."

But.... The Democrats were ready for this, so they just voted to change the rules. This left the Republicans high and dry and scrambling for an explanation of why they were doing all they could to kill the Jobs Bill without even considering it. The Republicans were caught flat-footed on this, and that is what they are upset about.

Republicans have vowed to get even the next time they have the votes to do so, and this is the headline the Democrats were looking for: "Republicans feel that petty squabbles and political payback is more important than the economy or jobs."

So now the Republicans are in the position of telling the American people why they do not like this bill. So far all they have said is they are against it. They have yet to say why. The easiest thing for the Republicans to do is not let the bill come up for a vote, but everyday the Democrats are asking them what changes they would make and getting no answers.

By the way.... The Republicans have said that Obama is not allowing any changes and that this is not Democracy. The problem with that is that the bill has been changed by Democrats in various ways and the White House has agreed to all the changes so far.

Real version is Reid panicked when he saw the jobs bill coming up. The Dems didn't want a vote on it for obvious reasons. They would be tagged for killing it because they did not have enough support in their own party.

It is amusing to observe that as the President is demanding a vote on HIS jobs package, the democratic leadership running as fast and as far from a vote as possible, while calling the Republican's desire for a vote "political grand-standing".
A President with any leadership skills would have developed his jobs bill with input from hos own party's Congressional leadership. That way they would have been united when the bill was introduced, and they could have had a quick vote. The lack of any administrative skills on the part of this President is appalling.

Don't fool yourself into thinking the republicans wouldn't have used it.

Their just mad because their obstructionism keeps getting exposed.

10 years of tax cuts, where are the jobs

I'm under no illusion that they wouldn't, it's all part of the annoying tit-for-tat game the two parties play. I'm just saying that those cheering this nuclear option will be jeering the next time the Republicans do it, and they will.

I can't say that I've paid too much attention to it since I've grown tired of the political gamesmanship by both parties (neither of whom I agree completely with), but I was under the impression that there wasn't the Democratic support for the bill that they needed and didn't want to see it fail. Maybe that's incorrect.

And that folks, is the way the goverment is suppose to run...nice and slow so everyone gets a chance to "read" the bills and make INTELLIGENT choices.

If the bill sucks...load it with "death amendments" or "death riders" to be sure it doesn't make it to the floor. This is another "Healthcare-Bill-style" problem we won't be able to pay for unless we "...tax the rich because they are..." piece of BS. There's not enough "rich" to pay for this garbage and in the end, it WILL be the middle-class paying for it for those that don't pay taxes at all.

Simple ecomonics...too complicated to understand by those already sucking on the hind-tit of the government sow.
