When you were at Ft. Wolters did you ever hear the town referred to as 'Miserable Wells'?

And that big cement covered area west of town where they stored all the little trainers... Did that area have a nickname? I am talking about the area covered up with FEMA trailers after Ft. Wolters closed down.

This question came up a year or so ago during a conversation I was having.

I was at Ft. Wolters May 1967 - Dec 1967 , then after RVN Jan 1970-May 1971. I was gone before it shut down... but stopped by a few years later.. very sad sight...
I have never seen any town near a military installation which did not have a list of cute names for the encampment on which they were making lots of money and suffering from being so close to so many transient men.

What ' little trainers' are you referring to ? If you mean those little orange buzzbomb Hughes helicopter trainers.... then no, I do not know...as I was 6'2" at the time I could not fit into those for training.. thus I was at the main heliport flying OH23's... the ones that looked like they had a ' stinger' on the backside with a covered tail.... not open like the Bell 31's used on the TV series in the 50's.... and which we used at Ft. Rucker for instrument training....
We had one student die from hitting a buzzard flying one of those Hughes... they had fully articulated blades...which means that if an imbalance occurs it vibrates itself into pieces... a semi rigid system..like the OH23 or a Huey is much safer...
