Fort Wolters/North Texas questions.....

I recently posted a question to another member about a military base, which is now closed, called Fort Wolters. It was located west of Fort Worth, Texas, and was mostly a training base.

About 10 miles west of the town, on Hwy 80, was a cement covered area where a lot of Hughes training choppers were stored. I was trying to find out if the area had a nickname or a real name. After Veit-Nam the Fort was closed and the storage area was filled with FEMA trailers.

Leathermag was able to offer some info, but I was asking a question that had nothing to do with his time at Fort Wolters so I am still wondering about the storage area.

The thread I posted this on is now closed, so I thought if anyone had any North Texas comments from the 50's, 60's or 70's this might be a good place to discuss them.

I'll start... Hwy 80 west of Mineral Wells was at one time paved, for miles and miles, with bricks. I think the original name of this road was The Bankhead Highway. Does anyone have any memory of this?
