Digital picture managment?

I am doing a study for a client in which I want to be able to present a report including digital pictures for reference. I worked neary a day getting the stupid pictures downloaded from my camera and emailed to my office. (I could not get my office computer to accept the pictures from my camera directly).

Can somebody direct me to a tutorial on how to manage digital images and include them into a report?

Not sure what you mean by manage. But if you mean some sort of software "library" there are many options. Aperture, Lightroom, iPhoto, etc. Each will let you build and organize a library and each will interact with the camera directly for download. For a Mac there are more options. For a PC there is Lightroom and I am sure others.

As for inserting into a report, it will depend on what you are using to draw up the report. Word, Quark, Pages, etc. Some do it better than others. I have not used a word processor in near a decade since I used a page layout program instead. Such as Quark or Pages. These are also VERY photo friendly.

Assuming you have Micorsoft Office 2007 or newer on a Windows computer, one of the easiest ways to get photos into documents or reports with reasonable file sizes and no real extra effort is to use Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Find the folder where they're stored at, right click on the photo you want to work with, and then select Open with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

The controls are mostly self-explanatory: resize, compress, etc. You can rename them to something clear text, like "123 Main ground floor"

Make sure to create a backup "originals" folder in case something goes wrong.

As far as incorporating into a report, that's dependent on your software. Assuming a basic MS Word application, you can Copy-Paste, or use the "Insert" tab and select picture. The "Page Layout" tab and Text Wrapping or Position may help with the position of the picture on the page. Captioning, hyperlinking, etc are nifty for electronic documents, but a more advanced skill set.

Tom, if you see a ten year old strolling by the office ask him to do it for you.

I do not want to become particularily computor literate on purpose. So have no hesitation letting others show off their skills. I spent the majority of my life learning so just decided enough was enough. If that dates me somewhat so be it.

I do not see a particular downside in this as I also can do many things the younger generations cannot. The majority of my daughters for example could do it for me almost without thinking.

You just need one of these younger people to take you through it once and show you. Otherwise you tend to hit roadblocks as you move along in my experience. These can be quite frustrating and time consuming.

Maybe one of our members can get you through the roadblocks fast. Worth a try. Lets hope so.

Merry christmas to all.

Doing a report in MS Office 2007

I do this daily in my Engineering reports.

Using the insert menu feature in MS Office and MS Photo Manager is easiest if you are doing the entire report in Word.

Make a template for the report and decide how many columns or what layout you want to use/works best for you.

Type in text and insert photos/objects (Xcel graphs, etc) and size them using the mouse (to fit the page/space). You can add arrows, bullets, etc in word.

Be aware that the size (kb/mb) of the photo does not change, so a report can get BIG in total mb size.

I do not recommend printing/distribution in Word. Change it to a .pdf file using Adobe Acrobat and you can end up with a far smaller file that can be distributed by email (I frequently end up with a 30-40mb file being 1 to 1.5 mb in size for distribution.) This also prevents anyone from changing or editing it. You can add redlines, clouds, etc in Adobe if needed.

The use of Adobe for distribution also gets around the problem of compatability of MS Word versions (IE MS Office 2007 uses the .docx file type while MS Office 2003 uses .doc file format and unless the reciever has installed the right format change option they see arbage when they open the file. Adobe Arobat Reader is free on the web and can view any Adobe .pdf file).

If you have anyquestions PM me and I can walk you through it.

Best Wishes for a Happy and Safe Holiday!

stoney
