Is rust a living thing?

I'm not a biologist but it seems to me that rust should be considered a living thing. I respirates. It eats. It reproduces. Wouldn't it make it a living thing?

So do politicians but they are not-- oh wait-- I was thinking of intelligent life...

Rust is a chemical reaction which does not require life to take place.
It involves unbonded iron atoms and un bonded oxygehn atoms.

You know what happens when unbonded atoms get together, if one is + and the other is -

On a somewhat related note, the CSS Hunley was "uncovered" yesterday.

Oddly enough it takes as much energy for a piece of steel to rust as it did to make it, but the reaction produces its' own energy so it works as long as there is oxygen to react with.

Rust can be arrested by using a type of chemical that transforms it from iron oxide to iron phosphate. I have seen this used in auto restoration in places where you cannot see, like the inside of a door.

But this only slows the rust to a crawl. It will still be eating away at the metal, but it will take a lot more years to show up.

Rust may not be alive but best treated as if it where. The metal is just trying to basically return to it's origins.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust... Rust never sleeps

I got a 75 yr old NOS chevy gmc maple leaf fender from an old warehouse -carter motors winnipeg manitoba. It was never primered and i got some guy in Chatham New york willing to pay my $700.00 price- im real nervous about UPS getting it there undamaged.
Anyway I hit it with metal prep and then the sandpaper and its good as new
home Depot carries metalprep by the gallon now--its a mild acid meant to be mixed with water 50/50 or you can use it straight.

Also setting stuff in white vinegar is doable for some rust stuff----if it hasn't bit into the metal.
