I was doing lots of business travel in Western Europe in 2000 while the Euro was in full swing.

I was in a Hotel in Eindhoven the night of one of the final rounds. I had a 6:30AM flight to catch the next morning and there were Hooligans raising all kinds of cane in the hotel all night. I was half afraid to leave my room the next morning.

I made it to the front desk only to find NO hotel personnel. The security people were taking care of EVERYTHING including the process of my checkout.

The European soccer fan makes the American NFL fan look like someone with only a casual interest in their sport.

These hooligans are disgusting. So far in the tournament just a few incidents fortunately. Overall, hooliganism seems to occur less and less. Modern stadiums have become multimedia entertainment theatres, and matches more and more a family happening, not to mention loads more woman in the crowd, as the pics show, very different from 10-15 years ago.
Terrific event, love it.

Thanks for posting this. It's good to know that the hooliganism is not as bad as it was.

Army,

I didn't think all the hooligans are Dutch. It's just that when the games are in The Netherlands, that's where I thought they congregated of course.

Larry,

I wasn't suggesting that the Dutch have the most hooligans - I was saying as Vronsky said in his last post that they try harder - they seem to be the most fanatical.

You should have seen the streets around here last week (before the Dutch team weren't doing so well - now they are out of the running - but hey). Everything was orange. You might of heard of the old military joke about painting the grass green - well here they do it with orange. Orange flags, orange streamers, orange sheets with a lion on it that looks somewhat similar to the Peugeot Lion(!), orange dogs, orange cats, orange trees, orange paving, orange people...

...fanatical! Definitely the nuttiest.

During the last world cup final between Spain and Holland two years ago; Sunset Blvd in Hollywood was completely filled with fans dressed in orange. Quite an impressive and hearth warming sight for a Dutchy in Hollywood.

When still in A'dam I would visit many AJAX games at the old Olympic stadium. When entering the stadium the cops in full riot gear would press us though small iron gates to our seats...not much of a family happening.

How come the Dutch seem to be the nuttiest?
