45 Years of AMG, Motor Trend Picks Its 4.5 Favorites

Surprise, the AMG SLS is not Number One!

Number 4.5: Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG

On its own, the R-Class is a complete zero to most car enthusiasts. But give the crossover/minivan to the folks at AMG and suddenly it deserves an honorable mention on this list. The R63 AMG was powered by the mighty M156 V-8 and produced 503 hp and 465 lb-ft, while sending power to all four wheels. It posted a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds, rivaling the E63 AMG wagon as Benz’s most dangerous sleeper. The R63 had a production run in the U.S. of just one model year, making it one of the rarest AMGs on the road.

The R? Yeesh. My list would have started with the Red Pig, then the Hammer.

I would have bumped the R for a real car, say a 560SEC AMG Hammer wide body with the 6L.

I would leave the R on the list but bump it down one notch. It certainly is one heck of a sleeper.

The R63 is rare because it was a total failure. There was no demand so they did not make it anymore.

Just because they built it, doesn't mean it was a good idea. In fact I'll go ahead and call it... it was a bad idea. Sales figures would agree and common sense confirms it.
