CT just passed legislation allowing liquor sales on Sundays...

Guess who the biggest opponent to the law was.

The CT liquor store association....

or as they are called around here - package stores... politically correct since the 1930's...

Blind pig

Another name for a growler is "blind pig". (Prohibition era slang)
If you have finished the contents of a gallon jug of beer and lay the jug on its side, it does, indeed, look like a pig with no eyes.
Maybe. . .

Not so easy to prove when the receptacle is some random bucket.
When I lived in UT, you couldn't have beer in containers larger than 2 liters. They may have changed it since then, but I doubt it.

Utah is a bad place to be a beer lover....

In fact, it's a bad place for a lot of things....

And yet, somehow High West Distillery in Park City is making some Mighty Tasty rye whiskey, and Polygamy Porter (why have just one?) is a great ale made by Wasatch Brewing in the same place. I'd hate to imagine the hoops those brewers and distillers have to jump through up there in order to stay in business.

They have some very tasty brews...Polygamy Porter, Bee's Knees Honey Wheat, etc. They're all just very low in alcohol content.

They have some of the most awarded brews around...

There certainly are a number of excellent beers from Utah.

The Olympics assisted in changing some of the more repressive alcohol laws. Bars still can't serve after 1am but at least you don't have to be a member....

They have also relaxed regulations on the strength of beer as well. Used to be nothing more than 3.2% abw, and that is still the case for beer sold in grocery stores or establishments that don't have a full liquor license.

I actually helped one Utah brewery package some of their beer for the GABF in our kegs so the 6.5% beer that went in the keg would not appear to be theirs if they were stopped and inspected. (they were actually concerned about such a thing happening)

Not necessarily. Uinta's barleywine is typically over 10%. But you're not going to get one of those at a tavern or grocery store....

Pardon my ignorance, but why is a growler any better than an equal amount of beer in bottles?

Buy in bulk and it costs less in many cases. Same reason a pint costs less than a bottle at most bars, or a keg is cheaper than a few cases.

A little cheaper and fresher. Getting a growler filled directly from the taps at the brewery ensures that you are getting it pretty fresh...

I used to fill peoples bottles straight from the conditioning vessel. People love that kind of stuff.
