The problem is that Yank Skanks are so damaged by their experience with 1980s GM diesels that they wouldn't buy diesels even if offered. This is changing slowly, but right now there's no point in modifying diesels to meet US regs since few would buy them.

Hmmm.... I wonder if this guy knows the difference between a kilometer & a mile, and the difference between a gallon & a liter?

I think that excuse is dead. Many who could consider a diesel car now were not even born then. Part of the problem now is the confusion between the price and usage variance with diesel fuel, the (incorrect) hype that the option takes too long to pay off, and the perception by some that it's still a dirty engine.

There is a Chevy Cruze diesel coming next year.. So they're starting back up slowly. At least they're putting the diesels in cars now.. Always seemed dumb to me.. diesels are inherently more efficient than gasoline engines..why not put them in a small lightweight vehicle!? No no we'll just put them in big ass trucks. Thats it.

Diesels aren't offered in the US because US drivers don't want them. It's a simple as that.

At least, that's what I'm told everytime I try to buy a compact diesel...

They're slowly getting here. I know the Audi A6 will be offered with Diesel in 2013, which should be similar to that Passat, and the A3 is already in diesel form. If they bring the GTD here (GTI with TDI engine), I will probably trade my car in and get it.

Which is ironic because VW can hardly keep them on the lots, and they're priced at a premium too!

I just turned over 10,000 miles on our new 2012 Passat. The total average so far is 38 MPG (with tons of traffic). When on a roadtrip we easily break 45.

The technology exists, and VW is selling every one they make.

This fact boggles my mind - (I agree) that VW Cannot keep TDI's on the lot and the used ones command a significant premium (if you can find them).

A basic Golf/Jetta has nothing on a new civic/Cruse/Focus/Corolla/Impreza quality-wise and from a sales/numbers/legacy perspective (going by magazine ratings here) so if a Diesel version of one of those were offered, I think that they'd fly off the shelves- or at least make enough money to justify the spend.
This seems like an easy sell to whatever corporate spending body they'd need approval from. car makers do sometimes take chances (Pontiac Aztec, Dodge Avenger, Honda Accord Crosstour(?)....

VW chose to extend a very large and public middle finger to anyone who has or will have an HPFP failure by calling it gasoline contamination in the fuel (therefore not a warranty issue) while quietly redesigning the fuel pump several times, so that hasn't done much to help the public reputation of new diesels.

Two reasons:

1. The EPA wants to ban over the road diesels and is doing a good job at it.
2. Americans don't want them.

True. However the EPA can have its direction changed by Congress and/or the President.

I see an awful lot of diesel trucks owned by Americans.

Americans who don't know they can get 70 mpg in a compact car or 40+ in a mid size, or who haven't seen Jeremy Clarkson lap Nurburgring in 9:59 in a diesel Jag might not want them. Many of us know better. A little marketing would go a long way.
