A lot of people say technology is going the wrong way. Too much distraction, too many trivial things, too little "real socialization"...etc.

But if used properly, like in this case, it can truly make peoples' lives so much better.

First, let me say that this is great. I have heard of this before, and know someone who was deaf but now can hear. However, I have a problem with the video. If she was born deaf and could hear for the first time in her life how did she know what the other person was saying? She had her eyes covered and the lady said, "Can you hear me?" and she shook her head "YES". How could she know what "Can you hear me?" means if she had never heard it?
I think the video came a long time after the operation that allowed her to hear.

There's a companion video of same story which says it's her deaf ear brought to life. Her other ear was apparently fine from birth.

Nevertheless, it's a great tool.

Hmmm...will this qualify as a "hearing aid" not subject to the 2.3% excise tax next year? Just wondering

I saw the piece on Pierce Morgan at work. According to the woman in the video she was born with a birth defect that affected her hearing. She was about 99% deaf. She could hear bits and pieces but was not 100% deaf. The cochlear implant that they put in improved her hearing to the point that she could hear her self speak, hear her kids.... etc.

I think it is amazing what science, man and a little (a lot) of creativity can accomplish. To allow a mother to hear her daughters for the first time is a good thing.

Here is a link to a Ellen DeGeneres interview that explains it a bit better. Something I thought was pretty sad is that the hearing aid costs over $30k a ear. Her mother in law cashed in her retirement to get the hearing aid. I am glad they got the money back but had this not been on line they would have been out $30k. We are willing to spend money giving a guy a chubby but not to help a woman her the voice of her children. How does that make any sense?

According to the interview linked above she is deaf in both ears (getting the second implant free).
