I have never owned a car that I could work on before my '81 300TD. I have had great success...with minimal effort so far...working on my car! I think that after another couple months I will be more balanced, so that the time I spend on the car almost balances with the time I spend on the computer.

On the other hand, the more time I spend on the car, the more I need to spend on this forum!

It is a viscious cycle!

You're a brave man My brother tried that once a long time ago. It was such a nightmare, he gave up and went back to just buying them. But that was back with Windows 3.0, or something like that. I suppose it's easier now.

This is also due to the fact that the last three "bought" computers I had (all three were secondhand, though) had serious hardware problems that, since the guts were all propietary, either couldn't be resolved or needed special parts ($$$) to fix.

Going to a "built" computer was sort of like switching from a Honda to an M-B, except I didn't have to build my M-B from parts I bought at Frys.

I own several internet data centers, so computers are important. However, I've never waxed, polished or stood back and admired them like I do with my cars.

I'm a computer guy by profession and career choice, although that's not blooming yet, but cars are definately a labour of love.

I will try to improve my cars with my knowledge of computers, and forget computers exist when I'm driving my car

Besides, driving is much healthier then starring at a computer screen isn't it?

Car, Camera, Guitar, Computer Guy . . . in that order, chronologically.

The crap they sell for parts nowadays makes building one's own computer a not so good idea. Dell and the gang have quality control and engineering standards that assure you are going to get a decent computer, while Fry's buys stuff that is probably factory second parts or parts that have not been thru quality control, assuring you a deceit computer. I have never built a computer out of Fry's parts that didn't require at least three trips back for parts exchange. I've bought hundreds of Dells for my customers, and I can only think of one that had to be returned for repairs.
