New Apple desktop?

I was on Apple's website yesterday checking out their new desktop that's coming out in December...maybe its time for an upgrade. Looked cool!

With the economy blossoming again I was thinking about getting one. 27", 32 gig of ram and 3tb of disk space.

Is there anything electronic that's not made by Ching-a-ling slave labor? This being said, with so much good used computer hardware out there, I prefer to choose not to support the economy. Much better to buy something that's a year or two off Craigslist at 50% of cost. Same goes for cars - never paid over $3000 for a car or bike.

How frequently do you change your oil and do you have Berkshire-Hathaway in your portfolio?

What's the new fusion drive they are offering? Solid state?

It looks pretty cool, Logitech makes wireless keyboards and mice for them now. I was thinking about changing my desk to a clear modern glass kind, with the Apple on top, and go all wireless for a sleek modern look. Kind of tired of having a tower underneath with a rats nest of wires. Only one power wire should be going to the computer.

I have to check out wireless printers, and some kind of nice speaker system for it. (wireless?) Maybe after the holidays I'll make the jump.

The Fusion drive is literally a hybrid drive. The OS software keeps track of which applications and files you use the most and put those files on the solid state drive (SSD) portion of the drive; with the remainder going to the traditional spinning disc and read/write heads. The result is faster booting of the OS and the apps and files you work with the most.

That's how I have my PC set-up at work. The OS and my most used programs on the SSD. Frequently used data on the spinning internal drive and RAID'd data on 3 TB of disks.

Last I checked a 1TB SSD will run you over $2,500. Just get a 240 GB or 320GB and partition it for your OS and apps you use frequently. Then run a standard HDD for your basic storage. Much more economical.

With editing 1080P HD and soon 2K and 4K footage 3TB is filled up really fast.

Apple being Apple giving it a fancy name.

Intel has their own fancy name for it as well, RapidStorage. My Lenovo was equipped as such from the factory. Im not a fan personally. You have no control over what the SSD reads/writes, i'd rather have the OS on the SSD and a few choice programs/games i run all the time. I guess it's better than just a plain mechanical drive though.

Going from conventional mechanical hard disks to SSD is a huge performance bump. It's about as radical as the difference of going from a single core CPU to a dual core was. My desktop now starts up faster than it wakes up from sleep mode.. no point to that anymore.

Those all in one desktop machines are horrible (whether they be Apple, HP, Lenovo etc). The whole advantage to a desktop is you can easily replace parts that fail since everything is separate. If say the onboard video on those all in ones burns out, you are basically out the cost of the machine, unless you purchased a 300 dollar extended warranty. If the display goes, you're done. If the motherboard goes, good luck sourcing a cheap replacement.

For the average consumer, having the OS monitor software and file useage to determine what to put on the SSD is a nice feature.

Makes no difference to me since I can't fix it myself anyway. The Applecare is a great warranty, I bought it for my moms laptop too.
