Google Chrome

Been using the browser for about one year or so.

Lately, it appears that it's capability to hog memory has become almost intolerable. After a reopen and using it for several hours, with about 10 tabs open, it's consuming over 700MB. The machine only has 2GB and I suspect that the consumption is limiting the capability of pages to load and the overall speed of the machine. Outlook is terribly slow.

Any thoughts other than more memory?

This one lost the "snappiness" months ago. However, after a close and reopen, it's not bad.

After a reboot, it's excellent. However, I really don't care to reboot the machine every morning................

I run CC Cleaner every other day or so to cut out the clutter.
It seems to help.

I run MSIE with no active features. I run Chrome when I want active features. Neither one seems too balky until I get 15 or 20 windows open.

I think the problem here is an ancient computer. 2GB ram? Most phones now have more than that. Chrome does like to use about 600MB+ of ram, it will use 6GB if you have it and have many tabs open, but if you were running an operating system that was modern and could manage ram use and resources properly, it wouldn't be an issue. XP does not deal well with much over 2.5-3GB of ram, and with 32-bit, you'll be maxxing out at 3.2GB usable anyways. I am running Win7 with 16GB of ram on a system also running multiple virtual machines, and never have slowdowns...and my PC is by no means "top of the line". Realistic lifespan of a (decent) computer is about 4-5 years. Low end pc, 2-3. Considering you can now buy 16GB of ram for about $40 or less, why suffer with old slow technology?

I watch Netflix on my 17" macbook pro, maybe that has something to do with it?

Brian look into one of the flash killer add-ons and for pete's sake put some more memory in that thing. The stuff is dirt cheap. Also, look at Chromium, it's Chrome, but without Google looking over your shoulder.

You know what is interesting?

Based upon the excellent advice of Cullennewsom, I downloaded Chromium to see how it would perform. Note that I started it up and copied each tab from Chrome to Chromium.

With both browsers open and running, the two of them suck up 1.5GB of resources on the 2GB machine.

But, lo and behold, Chromium has no issues with speed and the pages load instantly without any hang on any page, despite the heavy burden on the RAM.

So, in conclusion, you don't have a clue as to what you're recommending. We have conclusively shown on the other thread that you're a typical devotee of M/S and will constantly support the new product because the old one is NG anymore. This is a perfect example of how you're wrong, yet again.

This is the best advice ever given!!

This browser is fast as hell despite the RAM loading and, as a bonus, the typeface is larger than Chrome for some reason.

Thank you.........thank you...........thank you.

Or use "little snitch", stops evil google right in it's path.

Glad that worked out for you. I don't know why the typeface is bigger but (ctrl ++ is your friend). Another browser you might like is Opera. It takes some getting used to, but is fast and has some nice features. Try the add memory part too. Your PC can probably address ~3.5 GB (Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Memory, Laptop Memory, 4GB). I have 3GB in one laptop and 4 GB in my other(you should get 4GB). I commonly have about 70 tabs open before I start to have a noticeable slowdown (HDD/memory swapping).

I also find that it helps to kill/restart my browser every week or so, I suspect due to memory leaks in flash.

Thanks, but if this one holds out, I'm fine with it.

I will definitely get 4GB into the machine to further assist with the RAM problem. However, at the moment, with 500MB in use, it's absolutely not a problem with 10 tabs open.

Not at all a M/S devotee, I run nearly as much linux as I do M/S. By your logic we should all still be using kerosene lamps and typewriters. I doubt your profession (or numerous others) would exist as it does were it not for constant change and innovation, so why is this not allowed in IT?

I only have one issue with it on the second day (and was present after the install):

No link from the e-mail account will work. It lists a "general failure" when the attempt is made. Any ideas how to restore that?
