Black Friday happening earlier - boycott Wal*Mart

Great. Guess their workers need to come in at 5 pm for an 8 pm opening, and get no family dinner time on Thanksgiving. Besides, when did waiting in line to buy stuff become an American tradition? I thought that was one of the strengths of the former USSR. Bet Ronnie Ray-gun is rolling over in his grave.

Just curious. Will there be anyone there FORCING these people to do this? Will there be anyone holding them at gunpoint?

Just wondering!

Nope. But the employees will be pressured into working. Not like it's that easy to get another job in some parts of the country these days.

I feel like the game is playing everyone. The big-boxes getting bad publicity, yet feeling like they need to be the firstest with the mostest. Cash-strapped debt-riddled shoppers looking for the deal of the century. Employees of the big-boxes pressured into working when they should be enjoying dinner with family.

Time for Americans to show some decency and boycott, boycott, boycott. No to Chinese dumping. No to consumerism and cheap throwaway crap. Yes to genuine innovation, thrift, and progress.

I am with you on the boycott. THAT is the way to handle it.

Nobody needs to wait in line for a tv. NOBODY. I shopped at walmart once, and never went back. the place is ghetto, and full of junk. Shame on the people who are waiting in line to buy crap on their credit card.

As far as the employees, im sure there will be plenty of volunteers as holiday pay is usually time and a half or better. Have you ever considered that some people dont have families to spend time with? Or maybe they dont WANT to?

Those who don't volunteer are "not team players" or perhaps "lack enthusiasm." Even those without families still generally have friends to spend time with.

I guess I can understand businesses in the entertainment, hospitality, and emergency services industries being open. But I don't get why people need to buy a TV or iPad *right now* on Thanksgiving evening. They have a few weeks till the holidays, which is the ostensible purpose of Black Friday.

In that case, maybe you would prefer that they go sign up for food stamps so they could spend time with their buddies.

You are simply ASSuming. Some people are motivated by money. Some people actually look forward to going to work.

Black friday has morphed in to black thurs/friday to give sheeple more oppourtunities to buy crap. If you had a store like that, Id bet you would be open 24/7/365.

I work with plenty of store owners. All whom I know are spending the holiday with their families and children.

I like my work and work with some amazing people, but I'm taking Tuesday through Friday of that week off and heading down to my family's place in VA.

And that is the beauty of America. You can work as much or as little as you want.

Do you think that you, I, or most people who post on here are in the same predicament as most Wal*Mart peons?

K-mart folk have been in the predicament of working on Turkey day for 21 years says the article. I think Walmart still has some work to catch up to that record.

Im not a big fan of Walmart, but its not like its the only business to be open on thanksgiving, there are thousands and thousands that work all day.

^^^^^

I have never got the appeal of Wal Mart. Aside from some loss leaders, you can do better on pricing around here by scanning the sales every week and supporting more local/regional chains. In fact I'm not so sure you need to look for sales to equal or better WM's pricing, at least here in Canada.

Kmapart might be open 24/7/365, but I don't think they're pimping the Black Friday thing as hard as WalMart. Just normal business as opposed to having to deal with mobs.

Not necessarily. Most jurisdictions have regulations on how many hours you must work before and/or after a holiday, in order to qualify for overtime pay on that day.

Many chains (Wal Mart would be in good and plentiful company) are expert at manipulating employees' hours around holidays so as to not have to pay overtime for the hours worked on the holiday.

Bear in mind that most people in retail don't work full-time hours to start with, which saves a bundle in benefits, pay bumps, etc., so 'adjusting' days/hours of work around a holiday isn't a huge challenge.
