Petraeus' Roman Hands

CIA director David Petraeus resigns, cites extramarital affair

Well, it was nice of him to wait until after the election.

Good for him. I damn-sure wish other folks in power would learn from him.

I ain't holding my breath.

And good for Feinstein to say what she did. I don't like her domestic politics but the woman is straight-arrow on the intelligence committee. We need more like her in that regard.

Just an FYI - everything that occurs now and in the future...is occurring after the election.

Yeah, but don't you think the timing of this particular bombshell is just a little suspicious?

Oh, absolutely. I understand that Saturday is coming tomorrow, just a few days after the election. Seems more than just a coincidence to me...

Of course. Petraeus wanted to fall on his sword, not push Obama on Petraeus' sword. It was the right thing to do.

Have you got anything to contribute other than being a smart alec?

I agree. I wonder what effect it would have had, had Petraeus resigned before Election Day. Might have improved Romney's numbers a bit, but I doubt it would have thrown the election to him.

I know that was addressed to him, ... but I gotta tell you that's my reason for being here -- I get to be a snarky smart-ass in a way I rarely behave in public except with my most intimate friends.

So you can take it either way, I guess.

When would it have been an appropriate non-coincidental time for him to resign? Seems to be that if he resigned before the election the republicans would have claimed cover up. After ward they claim cover up. At least after the election it is one less distraction from real issues. Unless of course the right is assuming that the affair was not real and that a decorated general of the US military is lying to protect Obama. That being the case I would ask again when would it have been appropriate and non-coincidental for him to resign?

On the weekend before, not much effect. I think most people had firmed-up by then despite the pollsters saying 10% were still in play.

But a month before it might have had an effect -- death by a thousand cuts. This would have been one more.

I don't mind it, except when that's *all* it is. Let's talk about the issue at hand, and if you want to be snarky too, go for it.

I can't help myself. I like to take advantage of the disadvantaged - a terrible character flaw.

I'm no wonk, but three days after Election Day (and the day before a holiday weekend) seems fishy to me. Maybe a month after the election would have seemed less ... engineered.

So, in other words, no. Welcome to my ignore list.
