(anti) Abortion - which comes first?

Tragic Savita case reignites abortion debate in Ireland - World News

This is an interesting read. Without getting into the politics, it demonstrates how complicated application of any abortion related regulation can be, especially when the mother's life is in danger.

Personally, I believe the decision should be left to the mother and her doctor. But that's me, and I'm also not religious by any means of the stretch, so I probably couldn't be objective on this.

Wow. That is beyond archaic. So instead of saving at least one person they let both die. Welcome to the 17th century.

Why would being religious add or subtract to objectivity on the issue?

Tragic. The situation is similar in a number of predominantly Catholic countries like El Salvador, Nicarauga, the Phillipines and Malta. Abortion is illegal. The Catholic church recently excommunicated a mother and doctor for aborting the fetus of a 9 yr old impregnated by her stepfather. (In Brazil I think) Of course the stepfather wasn't excommunicated. I think it's a consequence of having men in charge of women's health.

Wow...this is when one wonders what happened to plain common sense

Of course, if the Taliban were in charge, we wouldn't even hear about such incidents, since these are non-issues in their world. I mean, they have no problem stoning women to death to "regain" their honor.

Where is the complication? It is her body. If she wants to remove the tissue, it should be her decision.

Why do you have to be religious to be objective?

If god had wanted them to be alive, he/she/it would have miracled them to be cured. Remember, you can't play god.

You check your plain common sense at the door of the religious institution. Get with the program. You only need to understand the simple rules of religion.

Theirs not to reason why
Theirs but to do and die.

Much like the poem

To clarify; my use of the word 'objective' in its adjective form...not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased: an objective opinion.

Obviously, my beliefs (or lack of), influence my opinion in this matter. Which is to say, I disagree with the religious explanation for not allowing a woman to decide what is best for her.

The Catholic Church's official view on the morality of abortion is that their view does not require religion to support it. It is a conclusion of the natural law which is available to any thinking person anywhere and does not rely on any institutional religious authority to be accepted. The Catholic Church has expended many millions of dollars propagating this position, especially in the USA which has the separation of Church and State. Were their anti-abortion views contingent upon religious beliefs there would be no justification for forbidding abortions under US law. Scalia in particular agrees with this view.

The Catholic Church tries to teach morality? If that isn't a sick joke, I don't know what is.
