Today is America Recycles Day

So please visit your local salvage yard and buy a part for your car.

I would venture to say that many here consider everyday Recycle day when it comes to working on their own cars.

And I have been reliably informed that a 1997 S 600 is currently being parted out in the Pick-N-Pull located on South Central in Dallas, Texas. I don't know how many S class owners might be into recycling, but a friend of mine tells me the black leather seats in this car look almost new.

GREAT IDEA! There would be a LOT more gently used Mercedes parts if it weren't for the Cash for Clunkers Government stupid program.

everyday.....

I recycle everyday. I had to reprimand my dinner guest last night for placing the empty wine bottle in the kitchen trash. I moved the green recyclable mini-dumpster into my garage over the weekend; thus I don't have to raise the garage door to take the recyclables out.

I'm also shipping this afternoon a used glow plug harness to a fellow forum member that I recycled from the 1991 350SD parts car that was in Pull A Part this past Spring.

Recycling is why I buy, fix, and resell these old diesel cars........

Reminds me, I'm going to try to get to removing a steering shaft from a parts car to donate to a fellow Peachparts member. How's that for recycling?

Coincidence--I spend an hour of recycling day getting aluminum parts for next trip into ft worth, 4-5 ac compressor, powersteering pump brackets, some more bundts, other ricer wheel, extra battering ram bumpers-- ---

something interesting, one was from my first 85 CA car and another from the 83 coupe I just had squashed-- The 85 rear was about 1/3 as thick as the earlier 83--and was buckled on one side where the car was rearended. The earlier rear bumpers are much more heavy duty--ill remember to snap a pic of the difference before taking them in.

On the bumper situation you mentioned I think the reason for this was a rule change during those years.

At the start of the program (1974) all cars were required to have 5-mph bumpers. Somewhere along the way this was changed to 2.5-mph since research proved most small bumps took place at speeds below this level.

But I am going off of my memory here, something which I normally do not trust.

I am going to recycle some brown ale here in a little bit, and put it's waste material into use marking my kid pasture fence against a bobcat the dogs can't seem to catch.

Technically, what you're talking about is "re-use," which is better-by-far than recycling.

Either way, keeping your car on the road with good used parts is a win-win.

Mercedes annual sales in 2011 consisted of 214,192 units. The number of Mercedes turned in during the Cash for Clunkers program was between 5,000 and 6,000.

That represents about 3% of all Mercedes for one year, or about .0014% of all Mercedes sold over a 25 year period.

A LOT more is a relative term, but .0014% is a fact.

The real question is how many M/B were disposed of on Cape Cod in the Cash for Clunkers program?

I'm quite sure you have that data.

ABSOLUTELY! Reuse is the most efficient form of recycling. Think of the energy it took throughout the process of melting down ore or scrap and then in some way forging, casting, machining..... Selling it for scrap does save a little, but reusing saves a LOT.
