Can You Like the Art But Still Disagree With Artists Politics?

From the NYT Magazine
THE (POLITICAL) BOSS

Can I politically disagree with an artist and still love the art? I’m a conservative person who happens to love Bruce Springsteen apart from the political causes he champions. Is an artist ethically just in rejecting a fan for not supporting him politically? Am I a fool for supporting an artist who would personally reject me over my political beliefs? JAMIE McINTYRE, BRAINTREE, MASS.

The Times gave an interesting response which is available on their website. I thought the issue was interesting given NJ Gov. Christie's long time fanboy attitude towards Springsteen, since clearly it's not only possible, it's done at some pretty high levels of government.

I don't give a damn. Most of them are brainless Barbie & Ken with money so I don't see any compelling reason to listen to them outside of the stage.

My one exception is Jane Fonda. That one I cannot forgive or forget.

As soon as I see what one has to do with the other, perhaps.

So if my favorite artist or actor does a piece of work I disagree with, I don't buy that piece.

Bingo! I can like it, but I won't lay out any money that can make its way to such an artist.

Most recent example is PSY. I think Gangnam Style is great, but after his saying in the past that he wishes: "a slow and painful death to all American Soldiers and their families" I will be as careful as possible to see that he never gets a thin dime from me.

The two things are not often related. But, do you require all of your friends & family to share the same political ideals? IMO it's not a healthy attitude to cloister one's self in a group where all think alike.

In other news. Larry thinks "Gangnam Style is great". No wonder he's so torn about PSY, after learning that he once had bad things to say about American Imperialism. I wonder , if PSY sent a sincere hand written apology to Larry, would Larry accept it, and go buy PSY's latest CD?

Is that not the point and question of this thread, how you deal with separating the two. Are you unable to process honest answers?

A personal boycott, Larry? Weak sauce. If you really want to express your displeasure, why not create your own Gangnam-style video with your septuagenarian buddies and knock Psy right off the charts!

If I could, I would, but I can't. Rapping is not on the top of my skills list.

Isn't this done often to actors who don't subscribe to the leftist-think in Hollywood? Has the actor who portrayed Jesus in that epic- gripping depiction of the crucifixion, ( so epic, that I cannot remember the name of the movie!) worked since? There are a number of political conservative actors that seem to be sort of black-listed for the political views. Can't be, LIBERALS would never do that would they?

It seems that some conservatives in Hollywood come out in their later years after playing the lefties game long enough to either establish themselves so well that it doesn't hurt them much, or when they retire.

If you are referring to Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" then Jim Caviezel can be seen on CBS "Person of Interest" series.
