Someone should ask the Director of the ATF how this could take place. It seems there is a direct lack of management oversight and the Director should be bought before the Senate to explain the actions of this group of Agents.

And this is the agency that would be taxed with keeping track of registered weapons? Puhlease...

Ironically, the ATF doesn't have a full-time director anymore -- it was basically made toothless under Bush.

I doubt it -- their handling of Waco didn't smell of a great amount of brains.

true, it was a CF from the get go. Had a college buddy get killed there, serving as an ATF assualt guy. IF the Davidians had had their stuff together (training), there would have been a lot more body bgas with feds in them that day. Poor planning, poor execution. I think they thought the Davidians would just roll over when the agents came knocking. Doesn't work with zealots...

Ruby Ridge is another sterling example of ATF gone nuts....

So there is no one really running the show? People in the field are just making it up the best they can? And things went wrong?

Wow. Who could have seen that coming?

We were once asked at BIG oil what our major job function was and we came back with 'Keeping the company's name out of the paper'. There were some higher ups that thought we were joking, but later determined that really was our main function. We were expected to process oil into gasoline; that was easy. It was doing it without blowing something up that was hard.

Right now the ATF might be thinking it would be good to have some folks like that around. I would imagine that BP could use that bit of advice as well.

There was an (unpaid?) part-time director in place, who also acted as US district attorney for Minnesota.

Time to get rid of it completely. Like they say, Alcohol tobacco and firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

We do need some sort of regulation of guns, if only to make sure that the guns being sold are safe for the users.
