Here it's once every 6 years for city/state court and once every 4 years for Federal. Serving in one excuses you for the other for the duration of the period, so I'll have to serve again in 2017 (at soonest).

Think of it as a tax on time -- small business owners still have to pay taxes, right? Secondly, jury trials (with the unpublicized but very real right of nullification) are one of the few things that are RIGHT about our justice system.

Lastly, as far as calling more people than they can actually use, there are several reasons. First of all, some cases have the parties come to settlement just before trial, but they have to have enough jurors for each case if they DO all go to trial. Secondly, some jurors will have moved or just plain ignore their summons. Lastly, jurors can be challenged by one attorney or another, so they need more than the minimum for each case.

What they do here is except for the first day you will be sent Home and have to check if they need you on the Phone.

From what I have seen if you call and have to go to Court it is almost a sure thing you are at least going to be part of the Herd actually going to the Court Room where you may or may not get selected.

They problem with this system is that while it saves the Court Money you will not be able to tell where you work when or how long you might be Gone. Worse if you are a Small Business Owner that needs to be at your Business every day.

They do allow some posponements so you can make arrangements for not being where you need to be. So with posponements you can stretch out your time to longer than 1 year when you have to actually show up.

I have being getting called to Jury Duty since 1980 and have had enough.
Arguing with the Jury when I was on a Jury tore My Stomach up during the Trian and for 2 weeks after the Trial was finished. I don't want to go through that again and have managed to get Myself booted of the Jury when I was actually selected.

Tell them that you will be great on the jury because you can tell if someone is guilty by just looking at them.

Might have worked in the past, but no longer.

Didn't work for me when I was a contractor, didn't work for my brother who owns a repair shop.

Legitimate basis for excuse by judge:

Health condition affecting ability to serve
English comprehension
Severe hardship that is unique to the juror, however remedy may be deferred service, not excusal. Likewise, travel plans are also likely to get only a deferred service.

The next step is that you could get excused by the judge, for cause:

Extreme personal bias
Inability to abide by rules and instructions

Or you could get excused through attorney preemptory challenges

I could have lied and stated that I had emergency repairs to make, or some such, but didn't really see the need.
Being part of what's right in this country is important.

Deferral here is nice, because you can pick a week 1-6 months in the future and it's automatic the first time. Send in the paper and you don't need to come in to speak to a judge.

recommended phone/phone answering machine

Our phone with answering on it finally crapped out a couple of weeks ago after 20 years of excellent service. It was an AT & T brand.

What is a good one to buy now?

This is for our land line.

About 25 years ago I got called, then got a call the day before telling me not to show up. I haven't been called since.

I, uh, have never tried that one for getting out of jury duty. Seems like it might work, kinda going for a little bit of an absentminded and/or crazy type thing, I gather?

I like convicting people.

They should pick retired old people to be on jury's, they are old and wise and have lots of time to do that kind of thing.

It would turn my world upside down if I had to sit on a long case. Thankfully I've never been called.

Don't remember the exact words of the Joke on the Wall in the Jury Room.

But it was something like this:
The Repeat Offender insisted that that Honest and Decent People could not be on His Jury because He was entitled to a Jury of His Peers.

I got out of it once for i assumed this reason. Would have enjoyed serving on the jury, but it did present a potential loss of income for me, especially if the case dragged out for a while. They seemed to simply dismiss anyone who was operating a small business and was an owner/partner ect at the time. No one who answered in that way was selected at least. I guess there were plenty of other people though.

Questioning process was interesting though for selecting jurors it seemed to me. There were no questions like "would you convict" ect, nothing that directly related to a court or a trial.
There were weird questions, like "what kind of bumper stickers are on your car?" ect. It was pretty much, what do you do, and then weird questions like that.
