Unhappy Car Problem

I have a 1988 300SEL w126.

My problem started a few hours ago today. When I stop at a stop sign and then accelerate, the Economy level indicater would start to sway and then move all the way to the right in the red area. Then the car starts to shake and jerk. I turned it off, then restarted.. the car went a little and then started doing it again. I stopped quickly at a gas station and added more premium gas since it was a bit low. Then I took it on the highway and it went smooth. 15 minutes in when I slowed down a little I felt a jerk. The engine tempreture was at about 80-85, the oil indicator thing pointed between 1 and 2. The RPM indicator thing did not have any radical movements and functioned normally.

Please help me find out whats wrong before I contact a technician.

Thank you,
Sharif

I would do a search on OVP and go from there.

It is notorious for causing all sorts of weird problems..

Hi, whats an OVP? Is this problem that I am having bad? Is this a pricey repair? I would like to know how it could have happened. It just happened all of the sudden and got scared.

The OVP is the over voltage protection relay. Basically protects all car's computers and such from voltage spikes.

If you search for it you will see the kinds of problems it can cause. I have not had any problems with mine, but others have had things from weird idle, stalling, rough idle, etc etc..

The OVP is not expensive, usually around $70 depending on car.

Not sure where it is on yours, look for a silver relay, with a plastic clear top with a blade type fuse in it. That is the ovp. Check to see if the fuse is bad, if it is, replace the fuse and see what happens.

Seems to me like you should do a search of the site for OVP though,a nd start reading up on others troubles and how the ovp was related to them....

I'm not saying it is your problem, but it is a good place to start looking...

Hi Alon.. I was reading the archive after I posted my last message. the car's symptoms are very similar. Also, how would I tell if the fuse is messed up or not? Better for a mechanic to fix?

If you can find it, you should be able to swap it out yourself.

The fuse if replaced may or may not make a difference. that is an easy change.

It can't hurt to try replacing the fuse. if it helps great, if not, you got some more research to do and or a part to buy.

Changing it should be simple that pretty much anyone can do it.
