Missing White Woman Syndrome

I remember when there was all the coverage of Halloway but there was a black girl who was abducted about the same time. I cannot find any information on it now.

According to the FBI, 40% of missing people are not white. You'd never know it from watching the news.

Probably right. That says something about the media

I want to tell you a story. I'm going to ask you all to close your eyes while I tell you the story. I want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to yourselves. Go ahead. Close your eyes, please. This is a story about a little girl walking home from the grocery store one sunny afternoon. I want you to picture this little girl. Suddenly a truck races up. Two men jump out and grab her. They drag her into a nearby field and they tie her up and they rip her clothes from her body. Now they climb on. First one, then the other, raping her, shattering everything innocent and pure with a vicious thrust in a fog of drunken breath and sweat. And when they're done, after they've killed her tiny womb, murdered any chance for her to have children, to have life beyond her own, they decide to use her for target practice. They start throwing full beer cans at her. They throw them so hard that it tears the flesh all the way to her bones. Then they urinate on her. Now comes the hanging. They have a rope. They tie a noose. Imagine the noose going tight around her neck and with a sudden blinding jerk she's pulled into the air and her feet and legs go kicking. They don't find the ground. The hanging branch isn't strong enough. It snaps and she falls back to the earth. So they pick her up, throw her in the back of the truck and drive out to Foggy Creek Bridge. Pitch her over the edge. And she drops some thirty feet down to the creek bottom below. Can you see her? Her raped, beaten, broken body soaked in their urine, soaked in their semen, soaked in her blood, left to die. Can you see her? I want you to picture that little girl. Now imagine she's white.

That was a great movie.

Why do people want to pretend that the media are are about anything besides marketing?

I read almost all of Grisham's books up to about five years ago. I didn't read the ones about criminal cases, my taste. I should go back and pick up the ones I missed and catch up on the new ones.

My wife commented the other day "What about the other girls? How come they're concentrating on Amanda Beery?" Because she's white, I said.

It was mentioned on cnn last night that if the victom is white, hispanic, or black does make a major difference in coverage etc. This would be approxiamatly the same in Canada I suspect.

In the north american culture I am lucky to have existed as a so called white person. I have serious doubts if I would have got so far if not. The problem is this does not apply to the extent it does in north america in many countries.

What is even worse is that we have a small amount of the population that do things like this. Plus in my opinion there is no punishment adaquate for the crimes in todays so called enlightened society.

There was a past head of the FBIs profiling unit on the show. Besides general platitiudes he really could not provide any real constants in my opinion or common denominators of these serious types of preditators. Other than generally what is common knowledge to most.

The three girls being found alive unfortunatly raise hope in other parents that their children may still be alive after many,many years. Of course there is a very, small to almost non existant chance they are.

From observing people that have suffered this on the show and otherplaces over the years. Knowing their child is dead may be far better than the unknown. The odds are all too strong they are anyways.

I felt bad for a twenty some year old guy that lived two doors away and was quite emotional about his feelings of guilt that he just did not know this was going on. He had not seen one thing over the years that made him suspect the guy was anything but a normal person.

I hope Cleveland has enough gumption to tear the house down. It will not fix anything but it is better to be gone. I would not want to live in that house with it's history. Or even have the house standing in my neighbourhood.

To me it represents or is a reminder just too clearly of what the worse things possible in humans are. Perhaps it will have an accidental fire to solve the problem. There have to be people out there simular to myself.

I figured they focused on Berry because she called 911 and they had more on her, from a personal standpoint, than the others.

If one of the other women had been the one making the call, and they had a lot of her voice on tape, she would be the one getting the attention.

It's all about ratings.

I figure that's a pretty naive view of the world. If it keeps you happy and lets you sleep at night, run with it. But, with all due respect, you're giving way too much credit to the media - and to the media watching public that feeds the monster.

If black girls getting kidnapped generated buzz among the TV watching public, you can bit your bottom dollar THAT is what the media would cover. They produce what they can sell for a profit, just like McDonalds, Ford, Sears, etc. etc. etc.

That may explain the coverage of this specific case but it does not explain the lack of coverage in general. I do not know which bigotry came first, the media or the public, but there is clearly a huge bias present.

I don't know about everything be as racial as some of you see it. We had 12 year old black girl, Phylicia Barnes who was missing for over a year. The Baltimore media covered it daily for a while, then at least weekly. Her picture was on the electronic billboards, almost daily, until her body was found. Whites were as outraged as blacks.

Just because you have a single story you can refer to does not mean that is the rule. How many Natalie Hallway stories have there been of women who were not white? The evidence seems to point against your theory.
