Dumb kids who think this and that makes the car faster....

I go to school with a kid that has his moms old Honda Accord he claims that his Bosch Plat. Plugs add 40hp his tubes that go to the cyl. As he calls them(plug wires) add another 10hp his OEM aftermarket cold air intake adds another 20hp and his cold air exhaust is a good 35.
How can people be this dumb? I don't understand. 105hp in addition to the standard v6.
O Ya the spoiler is on the way it will make it go faster on the interstate.

Is it true that a good muffler adds horsepower??? There is this kid that claims that it does... I don't think so. how can a muffler add HP to something where the HP comes from the engine???

If you have a better intake more air + more gas = bigger explossion and then it gets out quicker. This is how I understand it corect me if I'm wrong. But What i was trying to point out is the cold air exhaust.

That is typical "honda" attitude!! I live through this crap almost everyday at school. Some ediot talking about how his little civic or whatever is going to be able to beat this car and that car and always talking about the modifications he is going to do.

Its too bad you know, they have to do all these modifications to make that little s**t move because they come with like, 1.5 or 1.6 litre engines that have to be redlined all the time to keep up! When they see me in the Benz and then in class or something, they always make a stupid comment about the car like, "I dont think that big crap boat you are driving would even catch up to my civic"!! You know, stupid things.

I am sick of it!!

I know how you guys feel. It always seems that the honda drivers( and alot of cavaliers), are always the ones giving me a sideways look and that really pisses me off. I have yet to get beat by one, and I smoke as many of em as can. Spoilers, stickers and neon does not make your car faster. They shouldnt be dumping all that money into a piece of crap car, but instead use it to buy a better car. They dont understand that dumping all that money into a piece of crap car it is still gonna be a crappy car no matter how many stickers you put on it or how dark they tint their windows. Idiots

A performance muffler is supposed to add power to the car because there will be less back pressure from the exhaust, and thus the engine will be able to pump out the exhaust gasses out of the cylinders with less of a power loss. The coffee cans that the ricers stick on their cars offer almost negligable gains.

Dan, what is a cold air exhaust, I have never heard of one before?

I laugh and give these kids some slack...:p

Without a solid command of the applied sciences, it's easy to fall prey to "snake oil" methods of performance enhancements.

Back in the old days (70's), unlike the engines of today, there was some room left to improve the unrestricted, normally-aspirated, carbureted motors we tinkered with. Bolt on a big carburetor, add on headers and a "Cherry Bomb" muffler, slip on that chrome air cleaner...and don't forget to jack the rear end up to a point where cornering stability is non-existent!

None of these "enhancements" ever did much by themselves for performance, but if done in a full-circle fashion, could put 20 or 30 extra horsies on the road! Go down the street and fill up with Sunoco 260 racing fuel, and squeeze a little more...albeit melted pistons...

So let them experiment and deplete their meager paychecks with cool "looky-look" goodies...they will eventually learn and evolve...and eventually, buy a Mercedes of their own someday!

There is only one way to increase hp. Burn more fuel at the correct air/fuel mixture per second. This is done only two ways. Pump more air and fuel into the combustion chamber or ignite it more times per minute, as in increase the rpm.

Kinda reminds me of computer salesmen who always try to sell you the computer with the fastest chip and most ram. Oh yeah, Mercedesshop will load twice as fast with a P4 1.8ghz chip than with a P3! Never mind that you're connected at 14.4k

To be completely technical, those obscenely large spoilers that these people bolt on their cars will make them slower, if anything, due to the increased drag. No civic needs that much downforce, the extra drag will just slow the car down.

What I have always wanted to do with those massive double-wing spoilers is turn the airfoils the other way. That way, the positive angle of attack to the relative wind will cause lift, and some of those things are so huge, that I wonder if they could produce enough lift to pick the back of the car straight off the ground at highway speed. Also, I have always wanted to plug thise coffee cans with random pieces of fruit for fun.

But alas, I would never do any of these because I am too rational, but it is still fun to talk of the possibilities.

Hey! It's not only the Civics, I saw a VW Golf with a DTM style wing on its roof...
Even my friend who knew nuts about cars laughed his ass off..

I wonder if it's only me, however after driving the 300CD it seems that everyone just tries to pass me. Maybe it's just me... I guess I'm not as aggressive as I would be. I remember when I drove the Taurus... *Which IMO is a great and awesome car though it has many flaws*... I drove quite differently and would almost always match the speed of whoever tried to overtake me... (and it always worked.. pissed 'em off though)

I hope none of those guys who 'killed' my diesel bragged about his kill... that'd be kinda funny. "Yo dude, I killed a Mercedes diesel with my M3..."

It's not sad, its children learning a lesson in money management.

Those that purchase things with no knowledge of how they work or what they do deserve to waste their money.

I already know all about air intakes and the effects of temp and humidity and the realtionships of temp and density, etc. and how to extract more power from an engine.

However,
originally posted by Benzman:
OEM aftermarket cold air intake adds another 20hp and his cold air exhaust is a good 35

Dan mentions that the child has a cold air intake and a cold air exhaust, what would be the purpose of a cold air exhaust even though I am now almost certain that there is no such fish in the sea.

W126, you are referring to intakes, I was referring to exhaust.
