So, how would I know for sure that my car that you flogged would be made whole in the event of your fault? The good word of someone would would falsify certificates or lie to a girl in the hopes of getting something going with her?

How would you assure me that you have the money and the will to cover it unless I can see the money in my hand? Why would I or anyone trust your good word? Would you trust my word?

Better to just get a fake paper, 99% of sellers won't know the difference. Since I have enough money to buy anything that I test drive outright, a little white lie won't hurt anyone.

ASE certification does not involve apprenticeship, it involves going to take a few tests, a few hours time if even that. Master certification may involve more, but not basic certifications.

I stopped at 5 or 6 certifications when I switched careers, but I still have a legitimate certification card, and all it took was one evening of multiple tests. It can also be a humbling experience, many of the tests are difficult, even if you have excellent practical knowledge.

Fraud like that is a bit more than a little white lie. Aklim has the right of it, you want people to trust that you won't beat on their possessions, and you want to win that trust with a lie by flashing a fraudulent card.

better off just asking if you can take to WOT to test this or that, if not, debate the price

Fact. I can count the number of mechanics that I trust on one hand, and all are one or two man shops that probably don't have any ASE cert and may not even be 100% legal.
Self certification is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Did you know that I am a neurosurgeon?

Certification, while it is not a guarantee that everything will work out, it is a damn sight better than nothing. It assures me that you have at least some sort of training instead of simply learning on MY vehicle and on MY dime. It gives us the basis of a conversation as opposed to "Here is my car, there are the keys. Go try it out.". As to legality, I want someone I can possibly hang if things go south and I am not sure that your shop can not be legal and get insured. Without insurance, I have nothing. With insurance, I have some sort, not absolute assurance but at least some sort of assurance that I might be paid.

If you are going to misrepresent yourself, how do I even know that the check you give me is good or that you will not put a stop-pay on it? That is why I want cash and I will verify it is good.

Maybe it's me and I have trust issues. I wonder why. Maybe it is because of they way I see people behave?
