I don't even lock mine anymore. I could probably leave the key in the ignition. Most car thieves wouldn't know to wait for the glow plugs, and even if they did, they wouldn't figure out how to get it in reverse to get it out of my parking spot.

Yarp. My old Ford has laughable security on every front...but it's old and kinda ratty, usually filled with random car parts. Nothing worth busting into unless they REALLY need a spare fan

With under $100 in equipment I can over-ride the immoblizer in any 2000-2005ish VW or Audi. Just need to pick the locks, which isn't super hard if you have the right tools.
Locks just keep honest people out. -J

Had someone rummage through my car the other night.
Had my wallet, check book, random cheapo camera, parts for a lift, spark plugs, and someone random paper work in it. They left my wallet (with cash!), check book, and random papers, but took a few lift kit parts (can't do anything with them unless you have a W163 ML), spark plugs (for an M113), and the cheapo camera. Not terribly disappointed, but just curious, why steal the random parts?

Electronics can always be defeated and there is a tow truck for every application. Cars are often sold repo-ready. Repo-ready is theft ready.

I've never been particularly enthralled with having to visit the dealer to get a key for my W210, but it is more secure than the BMW setup. Once coded to a car, the MB key can't be reprogrammed. (There are occasional discussions about it, but no actual proof that it can be done.)
