the GM saab with the oldschool swede 4 cyl engine are tough as rocks. They have a few weak points

1 the steering rack is a bit vague because its mounted with bubblegum bushings
2 the HVAC box air flap thing fails - it looks like a toilet roll holder - the problem is the HVAC box itself.
3 rear visibility when backing up is ZERO - best install a camera

the pros

1 - the engine ages like MB engines
2 - the transmission is a toyota unit
3 - the cargo space is insane - think wagon like
4 - SAAB didnt pay attention to the cost cutting class of GM
5 - Its built by Trolls in Trollhattan

A friend of mine had a '94 Saab 9-3 turbo convertible back in the day. I remember it as being a nice driver.

I think he sold it, waiting for a call back. He's had it since it had 7K miles on the OD.

Thanks Z. I was operating under the mistaken impression that all the GM versions were total crap. I like the early all SAAB ones, but they are thin on the ground now whereas the GM seem to be cheap as chips around here.

I will add them to my target of opportunity list. SWMBO wants a more modern car (one with working AC- imagine that in Florida)

I remember the early GM version convertible. While the interior was a bit plasticky, everything seemed of good quality and well assembled. Nice paint and panel fit, and they certainly didn't stint on sheetmetal when they constructed the trunklid. I would put overall quality on par with a BMW 3 series of that era.

I am seeing a fair amount of sludge reports on the SAAB H engine. I dunno....it's not an OM617...
