Your line "you love to sound all pious and saintly in that we should all love everybody" is just weird.
Humans are very good at rationalizing their own behavior and faulting others for the same behavior.

I'd rather be put in a tight fitting pine box with some white linen - cotton sheet would do - with my blood still in me and sent on my way. I like a line I read years ago:

The earth has sustained me these many years. I owe the earth one body.

Trouble is, one has to assiduously prepare in order to be buried in the manner I suggest. Just getting the body released to them who will do the interning takes some doing these days.
Though it was most likely for public health (embalming), now it is all about the almighty $$ for the funeral industry....sigh...

Some are squeamish about having the bodies of their loved ones being like Corning Ware. From the Freezer, to the Oven, to the Table. Formaldehyde isn't surprising. Do you want to visit a corpse that is stinking and rotting after a few days?

As to a pine box, I don't know if they allow you to do that anymore. I prefer cremation because it seems like the cheapest option and WGAS after I am dead?

But can it be put into a hole in the ground or do you have to have a concrete box like I seem to see people do?

My religion (jewish) mandates cleaning the corpse by other jews who volunteer to do this, wrapping it in little to nothing and getting the corpse in the ground in 24 hours, often in a simple pine box, but a more elaborate box is okay.

The state mandates that the body be mostly covered in plastic, to retain leakage (dead bodies leak a lot, I’m told) and I don’t remember if they mandate formaldehyde.

I’m sure robbing the dead of gold and silver fillings is a long time fringe benefit for those who provide care for the dead.

A vault is not required, per the state.

So theoretically, I could wrap the corpse in several layers of plastic sheeting to keep in fluids and toss it into a hole in the ground? Interesting.

Me, I'm not sure I would ask the wife to spend more money on my corpse after I'm dead than she has to hence cremation. Besides, the request is that all my ashes and my dogs get to be put into one big box along with hers and then buried or dumped into the bottom of the lake.

Mammals decomposing in the aquifer from which potable water is drawn can be a source of unpleasant aqueous aromas and intestinal embarrassment.
