I just spent the last 5 days in the UK Medical center being treated for stroke symptoms. The tests came back normal. The Doctors couldn't figure it out. Finally a Doctor said it was Aphasia. I was also very low on B12. They have me taking massive doses of B12

Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that. Are you able to speak/read/write ok? Are the symptoms gone/to what extent?

Oh, and what the heck are you doing in the UK?

I can speak ok and also write i am very weak and have been sleeping since I posted this yesterday.

Oof. That's got to be nasty. Let us know of any updates, but only as you are able. I hope you are sleeping okay?

I'm really sorry to hear about this. It makes me sad, it really does... I hate to think of you going through even more struggles.

For those of you who don't know what Aphasia is, here is a description from the Mayo Clinic (how can you not trust a clinic with mayo in the name!).

Aphasia is a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate. Aphasia can affect your ability to express and understand language, both verbal and written.

Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slowly growing brain tumor or a degenerative disease. The amount of disability depends on the location and the severity of the brain damage.

Once the underlying cause has been treated, the primary treatment for aphasia is speech therapy that focuses on relearning and practicing language skills and using alternative or supplementary communication methods. Family members often participate in the therapy process and function as communication partners of the person with aphasia.

Robert, do they think that Vitamin B12 deficiency is the underlying cause here? Please let us know how everything is going.

Sorry to learn of this. Traveling can cause stresses that can produce all kinds of problems.

Did your docs check for what is called high levels of homocystene? If not, ask them to do so.

If your aphasia has past, you are out of the woods, but a fairly complete medical workup is a good idea once you get home.

Apahsia is a set of symptoms, not a cause IIRC. Sometimes doctors figure if they can put a fancy name on it patients won't ask any more questions.
Were it me, I'd want to know what caused it.

If I understood what I read correctly, B12 deficiency can cause Aphashia.

I had a massive headache on the left side of my head. I knew in my mind what I wanted to say, but couldn't say what I wanted. This same thing happened to me several years ago. there is a thread about it on BW. Two different hospitals thought it was a stroke. But the MRI's said that my brain was fine. I'm still very weak but doing much better. Now that I think about it, this was coming on for about two weeks, I don't know what caused it, I wasn't under any stress or anything. Any thoughts?

Sounds similar to panic attacks I used to get, started around 19 year old. Didn't fit the bill of normal panic attacks - I'd get super dizzy and not be able to speak. I wouldn't know what I wanted to say, but I just couldn't think, couldn't respond, couldn't walk (dizziness), just kind of got in a daze. Wasn't panicked, just completely dumbfounded and speechless, but mine was triggered by stressful situations. Visited a bunch of doctors, brain scans, heart scans, etc. they said everything was fine. Never really did find out what the problem was.

Still happens sometimes but not as regularly and not as severe. I had worse side effects from the prescribed medicines than the panic attacks eventually -- after gaining about 80lbs in just a few months and having emotional issues and personality change (thank goodness I had people to talk some sense into me). Dropping off that medicine was rough too. Never again.

I'll ask my gf if she has any suggestions on types of specialists to see (she is deep in the neuro field). In the meantime, eat more porkchops! Good luck bud, hope you feel better
