True costs of healthcare?

An outspoken doctor has a video on rc groups under their forum section politics and the universe. The video is just called the true cost of healthcare. He does not seem to be any form of a radical rather just an average practicing physician.

The interesting point he makes is the actual costs of healthcare have been rapidly declining for many years now. Contrary to what is claimed. Maybe it is worth a look depending on your current beliefs and knowledge.

Another thing is if you have drug coverage your co pay can be many times more than just buying the drugs outright. Interesting thread.

Also things like your co pays on tests being far greater than you can purchase them outright. Another interesting point was that if you expect your doctor to have any knowledge of even what he gets paid in reality you may be in for a shock.

Or him even being aware of the costs of what he orders up. His malpractice insurance for example has declined to under three thousand a year and a sampling by him of other doctors is similar except for some specialists like surgeons. They may be hit for 30-40 K a year he claims. The video is about 50 minutes long.

It may put a new perspective on things for a few people. Overall I do expect most Americans do know what is going on in general though.

Is this based on US health care or CA? Do you have a link? I suspect you are talking about CA. Drug costs here are crazy. My wife had to take a 10 day dose of high strength antibiotics and the non-insurance price was over $990. Our cost after insurance was about $60. Her gastric surgery was over $40k with our part being about $4k.

I do not know how to post a link but it is worthwhile looking it up I think. I am pretty much computer illiterate on purpose.

Barry, as one (ahem), experienced gentleman to another, links are pretty easy.

When you have something to share here, look at the space at the top of your screen where it indicates the location of what you are looking at. Put your pointer over it and right click your mouse (that's the thing you push around to click on things). A window will open with choices. Select copy and left click.

Now the address to the article is captured in your mouse (so to speak).

Then close the page or make it small where you have taken the link and open peachparts forum and left click wherever you wish to put the link. (You may put it in a response to an existing thread or start a new one).

The address for your article is stored in your mouse until you right click again.

When you have selected where you wish to place the link just put your pointer where you want it (as an example in a response to a thread box or in a new thread box) and right click. The link will appear as if by magic.

Try it, its easy. I finally learned how to do it about within the last year or so.

Thanks guys for the information and help. The u tube item is the same. I just felt if it saved any member a buck down the road somehow it was worth viewing by them.

It might be interesting as well to hear the doctor describe how the politicians are perhaps pretty much in the dark on many aspects of healthcare.

The current American healthcare systems behaviouirs was kind of known by an outsider like myself anyways. My issue was if the americans in general had all sorted it out.

I actually thought they had but far from certain. If nothing else it shows just how powerful and controlling the American private insurance carriers have become over time.

Since I am a Canadian I am trying to stay somewhat neutral and do not want to engage in whatever system is better than the other.

I have always believed myself that would be about the only way for people that want real changes if any to eventually see them. Some political party with the electorates urging. That is almost total extinction could occur with their party otherwise.

Just to make things crystal clear. I like the average American and it really pisses me off to see them treated like they are. I do consider them good neighbors and friends. Being an older guy I do not want to see your children and grandchildren burdened by what has been as well. They are going to have enough on their plates to start with.

Fifteen hundred a month for a healthy family of four is an obscene coverage premium in my eyes. That's 150k over ten years after taxes and work related costs to earn it. Or the cost of a cheaper new car every year.

One thing I suspect is that if I were an American with little to no real coverage I would not have a home in my name paid for or with substantial equity.

Instead I would refinance it periodically and hide the money. Getting seriously sick for a few weeks might otherwise cost you your home. If the healthcare costs where ethical in nature for those with no real coverage I would feel otherwise. Bankrupcy created by unethical or corrupt outside applications of causative factors is not unreasonable to me.

Almost everyone will experience some costly medical issue at some point. Or perhaps the odds that they may are pretty good. It took some guts for that doctor to speak out. Many if not most doctors would weigh the possible consequences of that action and not do it.

Or don't refinance and own a paid-off home in TX (or another state with a strong homestead act, which prohibits your PRIMARY home from being taken in a bankruptcy proceeding up to unlimited value).

I can at least confirm that claim that the co-pay on drugs can be higher than the actual cost. Few years ago I needed a refill on antibiotics since I was going on a river trip. Old prescription hadn't run out yet so insurance wouldn't pay. So I say, "Guess I'll have to pony up and buy the antibiotics outright.". It was cheaper than the co-pay.
