Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance. |

I'm guessing by that principal's standards, even the black and white cookie is verboten, since kids from somalia or blatherbotia may not have cookies.
And she'd probably condemn me for my use of "verboten," which must mean I'm a Nazi sympathizer. Or you could come to California, where a kid's lunch brought from home must be analyzed by the school and supplemented with such healthy things as Ritz crackers. And then be billed for it by the school. I'm not sure where they stand on sandwiches, though. ![]() |

I wonder when oreo cookies will feel the lash? They sell well up here in Canada. Things can become somewhat insane with little effort it seems.
Calling a peanut butter and jam sandwich racist is way, way over the top. To just call that a stretch either does not do it justice. Our family must be really infected with racisim as we always have peanut and jam sandwiches made on white bread. Although we consume 75 percent or more of non white bread in our diet normally. Although since we seldom consume peanut butter and jam sandwiches perhaps we are only a little racist. The next time I have one I will see if I feel racism in the bites. What really blows me away is the concept of general common food items having racist overtones as a concept even. Last edited by barry12345; 11-22-2013 at 12:35 PM. |

which is ironic, really. To me, Portland is one of the most segregated US cities I have been to (I lived there for 6 years). I guess after all the school closures, the dark skinned kids were funneled into classrooms with the "privileged" folk. ... thus, the disgust for PB and J. whats a good acronym for that?.... prejudiced bigot and jealousy? oooh ooh. yuPPY bourgeoise and Jim Crow. Yeah, I like that one. |

from the Wiki . .
In the early 1900s, peanut butter was considered a delicacy that was only served in New York City's finest tearooms. The product was first paired with a diverse set of foods such as pimento, nasturtium, cheese, celery, watercress, and on toasted crackers. In a Good Housekeeping article published in May 1896, a recipe "urged homemakers to use a meat grinder to make peanut butter and spread the result on bread." In June of that same year, the culinary magazine Table Talk published a "peanut butter sandwich recipe." The first reference of peanut butter paired with jelly on bread to be published in the United States was by Julia Davis Chandler in 1901 in the Boston Cooking-School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics. By the late 1920s, this sandwich eventually moved down the class structure as the price of peanut butter dropped. It became popular with children. During World War II, it is said that both peanut butter and jelly were found on U.S. soldiers' military ration list, as claimed by the Peanut Board. Nasturiums? ![]() |

I always eat brown bread so I guess I'm ok.
My brother worked at McDonalds when he was young. He said a whole lot of black folks ordered fish sammies with orange drink.....wonder if that is true (still? ever?)

I have been looking for the curriculum its self to see if the words "white privileged" was actually used or if this was used in a op-ed piece about the curriculum.

Fish is a big part of the southern culture/diet, regardless of race.

I remember (when I was in HS) that the superintendent of my school system got sued for harassment because he told two of his Black secretaries that he wanted to be the center of an Oreo cookie. Oreo cookies are racist. And sexist too.

I'm screwed. I heat peanut butter with honey on whole wheat toast in the morning. Not sure what it means but I know it can't be good.

One should be able to have a little fun with this one. I am sensitivity trained in spades and still can see absolutely no real connection of racist and peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Food discrimination is about as ridiculous as some of the regulatory people that I have to deal with. Give them a little power or attention and they become insane with it.
