I was Pulling into a service station at 9am this morning to get a cup of coffee and noticed two cars over a driver lifting a bottle for a swig from a clear bottle .While I was in the store I watch him almost back into a pedistrian walking towards the frt doors ,I couldnt get out of the store fast enough for a license plate but decided against a chase down via vehicle of a drunk driver,My only hope is that he forgot to get gas and was on fumes while DWI.

Two drunks spotted on the 3 hour drive home last night. Better ratio than last year at least.

One an suv with a movie playing, maintaining speed but slight lane swerving. Could have been a bad or distracted driver, but the regularity got me thinking tipsy mom or dad.

The second was someone blatantly wasted, going 40 on the highway all over the road, massive traffic jam behind him/her as people darted around. Hopefully cops nailed them

I like to drive a lot, and this kind of risk scares me.
Think about this logically. One, the nuts and crazies will be with us forever and forever, amen. Therefore, the only thing we have any real control over is ourselves. As for me, I figure it this way: the less time spent on the road, the less risk. Only absolute necessary trips are taken and then only during daylight hours. Interstate highways are another no-no. Between the semi tractor drivers and speeders, they are considered "high risk". Fridays are also out of the question, most accidents occur between the hours of 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Friday.

Drive with your lights on, windows cracked, cell phone and radio OFF. Constantly monitor all six positions and both mirrors because some crank will come up on your six, three or nine and take you by surprise. Enter intersections five MPH BELOW the posted speed limit. That way, you can take evasive action if needed.

May the force be with you......

Cracked windows. The best way to drive.

DUI except for the really chronic alcohol offenders is almost a thing of the past here in eastern Canada. The penalties have just gotten so expensive it has curtailed the activity to probably less than a few percent of what it once was.

I think the anti drinking and driving propaganda has also had a major effect on the situation as well. Plus the serious amounts of police roadblocks used in our area to check for registration, insurance and safety inspections. They also are on the lookouts for drinking drivers of course. The car I am driving gets stopped at one of those checkpoints at least twice a month. You almost never know where they will set them up.

I often wonder though about how many people get behind the wheel while under at least some influence from drugs.

Thankfully, we don't have frequent checkpoints here on the East Coast. I've been stopped a handful of times (maybe 3-4) in my life, certainly not every weekend!

They do upstate regularly. At least in syracuse they have regular checkpoints looking for out of date inspection stickers. Id say it was a monthly thing, get waved over, cop glances at your sticker, continue on your way.

Used to annoy the hell out of me whenever thy didn't see my sticker and waved me over. Stop was usually right at the bottom of an on ramp, and was a pain to get up tp speed in my rusty 240

They do around here. I'm in an area with a lot of colleges and bars, they're out every weekend in full force. Honestly I prefer that they are there rather than not, sadly there have still been plenty of nasty DUI accidents around here.

A sheriff who approved something like that would probably be recalled within a month here. Those of us who don't drive drunk (a minority I think) would rather deal with the drunk drivers than be constantly hassled by the cops, and the rest of the voters are habitual drunk drivers.

That was not my experience when living in PA -- I'd personally rather have the cops keep their eyes open for drunken fools. Hide in some bushes, pull everyone who's all over the road. Impound the drunks' cars, force-feed caffeine to those who are merely sleepy
