D.C. trying to ban Diesels
Council members: It's time to kick diesel trucks out of D.C. | Regulations content from Fleet Owner
I guess the DC council doesn't know how much cleaner modern Diesel vehicles are. Some would argue that a DPF equipped diesel actually has fewer tailpipe emissions than a DI gas car... -Jason

Sounds like Vince Gray is smoking some of the same stuff that Marion Barry enjoyed. *sigh*
Probably illegal as well -- they can ban new registrations, but banning the operation of vehicles permitted by Federal law on roads that receive Federal funding to maintain (all of DC, I'll bet!) would run into major legal hassles. This is a gesture, but a non-starter in reality. Last edited by spdrun; 12-12-2013 at 12:41 PM. |

I say, let them do it. When all the trucks are kept out of DC, they will not have food, gas for their cars, cloths, and everything else hauled by truck. So they will have to walk to some out of town stores to buy anything and there will go all the sales taxes they now have. Yes, let them do it. We can do without DC.

You are seeing electric delivery trucks around LA these days, eventually they should replace diesel trucks. Cancer rate around the port of Long Beach and LA are higher than the rest of LA county because of the concentration of truck running on diesel.

Well, LA is a natural basin for catching fumes. Perhaps DC is too.

More government nonsense from people who have no idea what they are talking about. They should welcome new diesels, they actually clean the air, especially considering all the airborne BS in that town.

I can definitely see why. In Rome you can see 2000-year-old buildings covered in soot. It's heartbreaking to see what 50 years have done to such illustrious landmarks. They can be cleaned through sandblasting, but that process damages stone further. Most historic buildings in DC are covered in porous marble, am I correct?

Most government buildings, wouldn't say most buildings period. Particulate filters on new diesels have reduced the problem massively in any case. The rule is 10 years too late.

I am surprised I didn't hear the usual dem response or excuse that it is for the children. Follow the money some contributor to his campaign has him by the short hairs and wants that payback now (ethanol industry?). Just my guess but the only reasonable assumption as no part of that law would be based on any fact, or would have any appreciable effect.

Much of the noise on this is coming from the trucking industry. They may have a point in that cleaner diesels are in operation, but the implication that DC is trying block big trucks altogether is untrue.
DC is planning on offering tax incentives to anyone who converts their truck to run on LPG, natural gas or E85. I don't know about E85, but I do know that diesels will run very well on LPG or natural gas. I also know that this is not new. In fact it is so common that Motorweek has a weekly segment on different cities progress in this area. Motorweek is available on PBS stations, Velocity TV and on-line. More if you are interested.... If it is such a good idea then, I wonder how many of DC and federal trucks are running on anything other than diesel.
