I really don't see the 'err on the side of caution' approach of the school systems regarding snow days to be a real teaching moment... Unless it's maybe teaching your kids to be aware of the possible negative outcomes of their actions... Learning early in life to not do stuff that can get you sued isn't a bad thing, excepting for the statement that makes about our society at large.... My humble guess is that one too many districts had a problem and now all have adopted the road of less liability. With the increase in population, we have an increase in road congestion, and putting kids on the side of the road waiting, or riding in the bus on snowy days only increases the chance for a bad outcome. I like to dust off the ole 'back when I was a kid' comments as much as the next guy, but I really can't complain about how our local school district handles the adverse weather. Besides, they can always grab days from that meaningless week of vacation in the spring. That's what that vacation is designed for, right?? |
I think another reason that school gets cancelled (and you guys in states that don't see as much snow might not think of this) in snow country is that big mounds of snowbanks tend to get piled up along streets, forcing kids to walk in and wait for the bus on streets to get to school. When the roads are already narrowed, having kids stand in them while people who can't drive in snow drive past them is not a good thing by any means...

My grandfather was pretty bad by even Boston's standards -- my uncle tells us that the cabbies either knew him or knew his type, because when he came along, they moved out of the way! |

In my defense, you did call me a bad name! ;) And the last comment was not aimed at you, of course. :D We're all exceptions to the rules here. :) |
Yeah MA drivers are a special kind of stupid.

No dispute there -- they're worse than philly. |
MA isn't helped by the fact that towns in MA don't know the meaning of street signs. e.g. Arlington, MA has few signs for Broadway. When I asked my friend who lived there about it, she said "well, it's the widest street, they expect everyone to know it's Broadway." Riiiiight.

No problems up here. Just don't go on the shoulder.:D

^ that looks a lot like my ‘hood in the winter……..and spring…… and into about July…. I feel much safer driving in the stix than when I’m in the city. A couple of inches of slush will bring the city to a near standstill. The real threat is not the sloppy snow but the hundreds of thousands of cars that transform the slop into a shiny hard layer of ice with glass, plastic and other bits of broken cars mixed in. If people would just put good winner tires on their cars and trucks, and add several hundred lbs. of weight to the pickup trucks, it would solve about 99% of the issues. But nooooooo. |
