Noble on one hand. On the other, why pick Detroit as a location? Highly polluted, corrupt, services aren't good -- from strictly an economic standpoint, is it better than a small town in Texas where land is cheap, for example?
Unless you need to get deliveries via ore boat, the latter might be as good of a location. |

I do not think Detroit can make any form of resurgence unless a lot of difficult problems are solved or eliminated. No real money will probably look at the place until it becomes civilized if ever again. I actually would expect it to still get worse if that is possible.
We may have more lesser Detroits on the horizon in the future. Detroit is setting a horrible benchmark for dysfunction. I wonder if a lot of it stems from the bulk of the population not really needing an education to work at auto plants in the past. That said I have seen cities come back. Detroit unfortunatly for whatever reasons has gone way down in comparison to what the others that came back have. To say the activity of thirteen young people is any form of resurgence is really editorial stretching things almost beyond belief. To me from an American national perspective it is like the city has been written off. What is there exists with no probable real upside for a long time if ever. |

We already do have quite a few mini-Detroits... Camden, NJ. Baltimore, MD. Reading, PA. Not sure why they're not getting the same level of attention as Detroit.

I also agree it would be nice. My thoughs are it is almost impossible unless something where really solid like law and order.
My reading is basically some young people are trying to get a living out of the place going for themselves. Nothing wrong with that either. Society has to have certain infustructure type things working normally to enable function. I used to go into the old part of Newark New Jersey after the riots. You could not pay me enough to have existed in that environment. It was extremely dangerous as well. I was told the police would not leave the station after dark. True or not I am not certain of. I made a decision that if any car tried intentionally to stop my truck I would without question just push them out of the way. Stopping could prove lethal. The only place I have ever been where I though a gun in the truck may not have been a bad ideal. It was obvious the people there had nothing at all to lose. When I stopped to pick up my cargo the firm provided two huge unbelieveable huge tough guys to stay with the truck until loaded. Littleton avenue rings a bell. Cobblestone paved street with steam coming out the sewer covers. Burned buildings leaving gaps. Like something out of a movie. The state of the residents still there was deplorable. I'm surprised you lumped in Reading with them but I can't say I can argue with it.

Highest rate of povery in the nation. Also, I had a neighbor who was a fireman there -- he threw in the towel after a couple years.
