Hope I am not jacking your thread but it seems a catchall for prostate/kidney stone related. Got the results back from the prostate biopsy-all 16 samples negative. I had a few sleepless nights. However still peeing blood-the Urologist said the biopsy is invasive and the bleeding is normal.(with 16 holes in my prostate) Going in next week for another CAT scan to see how the potassium citrate is working on the stones.

Post Rough News

Tony ~

That's good to hear a clean bill of health, sad to hear about sixteen holes ! .

Bleeding in urine or anally seems to be coming much more common than I remember .

I had lost enough blood that I was feeling a bit fatigued. Then they said my counts were low and gave me some platelets I think to help with it. I am feeling strong now. I estimated that I might have lost nearly a couple of pints of blood?

Post Blood Loss / Donation

I hope you're a typ O ! .

I'm a Typ O+ meaning I'm a 'universal donor', pretty much anyone can use my blood, I used to donate a lot, then my work mate's son got lukemia so I'd go donate platelets (nasty business, TWO needles) for some years after he'd died .

Take it easy, drink lots of fluids and follow the Dr's advice ! .

It's not THAT much blood-it's just the presence of it. I feel totally normal otherwise.

O.K., got it .

I don't coagulate well so I'm accustomed to seeing blood although never in stools or urine yet.....

I did lose what appeared to be a substantial amount of blood rather than mostly urine twice. Kind of gets your attention. When blood is present with the urine itself. It does not take a lot of blood to modify the urine's color. It really does not appear to be a lot of blood loss to take you down a peg physically.

Even just a steady not visable amount lost in the urine can do it.

Kind of like when you pour red wine into white-doesn't take much.

Had follow up appt with the Urologist yesterday concerning Biopsy and kidney stones. He wants to do extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) on 2 stones-has anyone had this? Just wondering about it. Apparently the Potassium Citrate will not dissolve the stones-it prevents the formation of new stones and keeps the ones I have from getting larger. Good news-I won't need another biopsy unless my PSA gets to 10. It's 4.5 now.
Also he is putting my on 2.5mg daily Cialis since the Flomax by itself is not working.

The extraterrestrial shock treatments sound a lot like what they did with my big stone. Seemed to work...?

Yes. Lithotripsy is relatively painless. They give you a mild sedative, but you won't be out. Then you float while the doctor turns you into a video game. If they are successful at pulverizing the stone, the debris will pass without problem and that will be the end of it. In my case, a chunk of stone became stuck in my ureter. The pain was epic. Clearing the blockage required a procedure performed under full anesthesia, where they ran a tool up and snagged the chunk in a sort of basket. Because of the size of my stone (23mm), it took a total of five litho sessions, plus the basket deal to completely clear. As awful as this sounds, you don't want open surgery

As for your biopsy, don't consider the case closed if the result was negative. Biopsying prostate cancer is like spearing a cherry floating in a punchbowl while blindfolded. Don't be surprised if he recommends continued surveillance and another 13 cores in a few months.

I put the question to the Dr about when I might need another biopsy and he said twice a year PSA's from now on and if it get's to 9 or 10 another biopsy. The Dr said my prostate is large (not quite trophy but a keeper non the less) for my age (61) and my PSA is normal for a prostate of my size and age. PSA is 4.5 now. As my father died from Prostate cancer(actually the treatment not the actual cancer) I am most aware of how critical continued surveillance is. He mentioned shrinking and the associated side effects.

Exclamation Prostate Warning

There's a Moto guy I know named 'Snowbum' who's PSA's jumped by like 1.5 and he insisted hos Doctor take a closer look, this saved his life .

I urge you to search our Snowbums pages until you find the frank and open articles he wrote all about getting and surviving prostate caner, once it's there you have to move fast or you lose .

Today got the blood vessel blocking treatment to reduce the size of my prostate. Pretty painless. It's been about five hours now. I am free to move around and drive but to avoid heavy lifting for a week or so.

It was done at the UNC hospital at Chapel Hill. Nice folks. We are staying at the Carolina Inn....kindof high end for our taste, with a character that rivals places we stayed in Europe which were half the price.
