Karting

In the last several weeks I was bitten by the karting bug. We have a few tracks here in Orlando, one outdoor and one indoor, and I've done both and find the experience to be really fantastic. The indoor karts are ok, but the outdoor ones are where it's at.

However it is kinda expensive at $40 for three 10 minute races, but man is it fun. It's a good workout and keeps your brain going at a million miles per hour.

I'm considering getting in to it for real and buying a kart, but that is way more expensive obviously. Still, I haven't done anything that fun in a loooong time, and it is a great stress reliever.

Any of you guys kart or care to comment on getting in to karting?

I do autocross in SCCA. Karts are run in some meets. Using them for autocross would be cheaper than going to a rental track.

Our local track has (or had at least) a special which was $99 for all day karting. Haven't been in a while though, been meaning to go again. Also been meaning to hit the autox scene now that I don't have to work weekends anymore.

The 99 for all day is a deal if the karts are fast enough and well maintained.

When my daughter was a teenager, she and I took up Kart Racing. She was a natural to a point that I wish I had started her when she was about 6. Of course, her crew chief always managed to give her the best chassis/tire/gearing setup on the track.

When I dealt with lots of customers, I would take them to an indoor Kart track for entertainment when we had various gatherings. It was fun to watch some of them protest, thinking it was like we were going to take them for a ride in the kiddy cars. Once there and after a few laps, they would be so excited you wouldn't think it was the same person. As we were leaving they would be asking when we could come back.

It's a hoot.

Karting is first rate fun but indoor tracks can lead to dizziness in some, which can cause, uh emesis.

I’d love to run a good kart on an outdoor track. Going 70+ about 1” off the pavement would be awesome! Tho I bet the suspension is unkind on an old back.

A formula ford lets you ride 1.5" off the track and has fully independent suspension.

With autocross gearing it will do sixty in about 4 sec. With road race gears it'll do 120. Steering is less than 180 degrees lock to lock so things happen quickly. With the engine behind you the ride is pretty good. With the dog gears you use the clutch on takeoff and after that you shift clutchless as quickly as you can pull the lever. With Hoosier slicks you can pull about 1.4 G. After the first event of the year it will give you rubberneck for a while.

It is fun!

There is a Kart track in Indy (fast times) which has some pretty fast cars. I have run it several times. It has a place where the racing surface is metal so its like Ice. The last time I ran there I got bumped off the best line into the guard rail. I hit very hard perfectly parallel to the rail. It did not break anything but I had a bruise all up and down my left side from armpit to top of cheeks and about 8" wide. I also found on one of the turns if you hit the guardrail I was hitting my forearm on the loose plywood on the wall. A person was killed there a few years back. I decided after the bruise I did not need to run there anymore. also at 203 the lighter guys would run away from me and that was definitely annoying.
