So where were you in the fifties? In my Dad's Indy shop in the mid fifties, he was doing a land office business with auto AC. Most everyone I knew at the time had air conditioned cars, save for the folks driving older cars.

I had enough so I said screw it I'll buy a sanden kit.
Why are you getting oil in the face? There shouldn't be so much oil in the compressor to pour in your face. Put the compressor in place, and THEN put in a little oil. Distribute the oil throughout the system. A few ounces in the condenser, a few ounces in the r/d, a few ounces in the evap.

I wish I were there to put it in place for you, but since I'm not, just cool off, pour the oil out, and dive in with a vengeance. YOU CAN DO IT!

I assume that that would have been somewhere in the South? You guys probably adopted AC well before the northern states.

Well enough leaked out soooo yeah...

I removed the thing and I'm just going to go with the sanden kit. It's a better solution than an R4. We plan on keeping the Benz for a long time

Not born yet. But I remember quite a few un-air-conditioned 70s cars in NJ in the early to mid 80s. Maybe reliability wasn't that great at the time, A/C systems didn't work as long, and people didn't want to pay to fix 'em?

If they would have been in central Texas at the time, many of them would have mortgaged the house if need be to get them fixed.

In the fifties it was big business in the heat of the year.

I too am a fan of the Sanden, but due to its versatilty. It is no more durable than a PROPERLY rebuilt R4. Of course the trick is knowing which one is PROPERLY rebuilt. I would think that mounting an R4 would be easier than the retrofit. I've dealt with both on the 123 cars.

Anyway, hang in there and get ac soon. I'm already starting to use it a little here.

You need to sort of find your inner CHI to fit the R4 compressor. Also a great lifesaver is excellent quality grippy gloves so your fingers are not applying huge force to keep it steady.

That's what I like to hear! Your W123 is a diesel, right?

Being raised up in Nebraska, I learned in my early 20s after moving to the Deep South, then the Southwest, that there was no comparison to the grip the heat 'n humidity gets on the more Southern climes. Driving the Southern climes in the direct sun of your vehicle makes you feel like a pheasant under glass being cooked. In short, it's miserable. AC is worth it's weight in gold. John-vstech has it right in his sig area!

Whats it like to need A/C? Around here the warmest day we've had in 2014 was 76 degrees, since then we've been lucky to get much over 60....today the high is 71....then back into the 40's and 50's again for the next 8-10 days. Even after that....mid 60's as daytime highs for a while....
