Chase Bank: ID for cash deposit
I haven't deposited cash for a while, since I usually get paid via check. Today, I wanted to make a small ($50) cash deposit into my Chase account, and the teller asked for ID. I HATE HATE HATE being asked for "papers please", not that I have anything to hide.
Apparently, a new policy to prevent money laundering(*), as part of a consent decree between Chase and our lovely govno-mint. Do all banks do this now? Any recommendations for banks to switch to after I close out my Chase accounts on Monday that don't treat me like a f**king criminal? (*) - I thought the point of money laundering was NOT to deposit cash, but rather to do something like buy things with small amounts of cash, resell them for check/credit card payments, and turn suspicious deposits into innocuous ones. The people depositing the cash would be involved in 100% legal transactions, since they'd just be sellers of legit goods. |

We've banked at the same place for about 20 yrs. New teller a few months ago. Refused to let my wife deposit a check into our account which was made out to me and signed by me even though the account is joint. She wrung his neck, judo kicked him in the balls, talked to the manager and got him in line.
The most irritating thing are the calls after we conduct a transaction asking us to complete a survey. I told them unless they stopped calling me every time I would stop banking with them. Now they've started e-mailing me.

I just deposit cash at the ATM. No questions asked there, but when I do deposit cash or checks at the teller, I usually also hand over my ID as well as checking card since they sometimes ask for both. I can think of bigger things to worry about honestly.

Credit union always asks for every transaction so I always have the ID ready when ever I go in.
You could always use a mattress. ![]()

Or maybe time to move to a 3rd-world country where the cash economy is still accepted and not an object of suspicion. Too much suspicion in Dumberica since 9/11 -- leaving frequently feels like a breath of fresh air. You know, in some European countries, you can still board intra-EU flights without being asked "papers please, now take off your belt and shoes, prisoner." Even without applying for pre-check special status.
ID checks are the least of it. Re-entering the US after a trip to Quebec last year, I got the third degree, including some totally f**king inappropriate questions like "are you dating someone in Canada" from the American border guard. Unless he thought I had her and her family stashed in my trunk, I don't see how that would be reasonable (not that Canadians have such a burning desire to enter the US any more lol). |

Yet another reason to use Bitcoin for various small transactions.

Right, because your average guy wanting to buy a set of steel rims on CL knows how to use Bitcoin. OK then.

Glad that there's at least some pushback against voter ID laws -- hopefully this turns into a trend. If the pushback enables a few terrorists or drug dealers, so be it. That's the price of living in a free society. PS - "never?" How old are you? 20 years ago, we used to walk my sister to the gate at Laguardia to see her off when she went back to college. We had to go through the metal detector like everyone else, but no one checked our papers (or hers, beyond having a valid ticket in hand when boarding). A lot of things changed to excess, all because of an isolated incident that killed one-tenth of the people who die in traffic accidents every year. In short, we overreacted to a blip on the radar, and the 4000 or so deaths were just the price of living in a free society. Last edited by spdrun; 05-10-2014 at 10:27 PM. |

I didn't get ID'd in Dubai when I went to board my plane back to the states.
Nor do I really ever get a ID'd when using any of my CCs...
