How far from US waters is the USCG responsible for searching for non-citizens?

Begs the question or establishes a precedent.

The USCG does lots of SAR operations, I don't know the details or even if they are taking the lead on this one.

Seems weird to me that the didn't have a precise location from an EPIRB or a personal EPIRB. Don't transatlantic boats all carry those nowadays?

X2 especially since they are low on funds as is for needed services here in the USA. As a professional mariner I won't sign this.

Well they found the boat, the US Navy inspected it and the sailors are dead.

The US government did it as a favor to our UK allies who have done the same for our citizens on a number of occasions.

So as a fellow mariner since they are not US citizens let them drown? This is why your not in the USCG, do scrub the bilges or something.

Coasties are required to "care" about non USA citizens or they can't join?

If you are going to go across the ocean- be it any ocean- in a 40 foot vessel- you take the risk that **** happens; especially if the captain is 22 years old. I don't think that we as humans should deploy 4 HC-130's, a USCG cutter, a USN warship, a helicopter, 5 private 600+ foot ships plus 40 smaller private craft to find you. Blatantly dumb **** by young (or old) people should not be grounds for us as a society to spend millions to CYA 1000 miles offshore no matter what your nationality.

You're right, they should stick to drills only.

How long does it have to be before you don't take the risk?

Your boats not that big either, so if you go down your not going to light off the EPIRB? Save the money, and kiss your a** goodby?

All these sailors were very experienced BTW.

I've sailed European rivers and I've seen the North Sea up close...did even 129mph on the water.
