Argument with a eBay Seller
This is the item the Seller is selling
The AD So to believe the above Ad you would have to believe that the Japanese Manufactured a crude Copy of a Kabar type Knife and stamped SOLING JAPAN on it. I sent him the Following: Dear leftie224, Vietnam Era SOLING JAPAN (copy of) MK2 Fighting KNIFE You are looking at a 1960's vintage, Soling Japan MK2 fighting. These MK2 type Japan made knives were commonly used in Vietnam. *BLADE: 6" long, very sharp *HANDLE: leather multi-spacers *FITTINGS: Steel guard and butt *OVERALL LENGTH: 10 1/4" The above is someone elses Ad for the same Knife. Even this Ad is highley speculating use in Vietnam. The real Military Kabar type Knives have the leather Handle impregnatied with some anti fungal stuff so the leather does not rot. Unless you were in the Highlands of Vietnam the Leather Handle would not last. A google image sharch for Soling Japan shows that they made verious Sporting Goods including Knives in the 1960s when Made in Japan meant something cheap. You used to see Ads for the same knife in Field and Stream Magazine when I was a Kid in the 1960s. Also the Kbar Knives were not designed till after WWII Started and a Jap WWII Knife would have Jap Language/Aresnal marks on it. Seller: I cannot debate a knowitall........ but why the hell are you talking about a kabar knife ?? Why not not about WW a U.S. Camillus WWII Knife,,,,,,,,,, which has a identcal stacked leather handle,,,,,,,, or leather handles on a cattaraugus ? Or are they highly Dear leftie224, Until My Collection was stolen I was a Collector of Bayonets an Military Knives. I really hate to see some Ad I know is BS; however I take in to account that a lot of eBay Sellers sell stuff they don't have knowlege of; meaning I try to believe the Sellers have good intent and are not lieing just to inflate the Price. The U.S,N Mark 2 and it was designed by Cammillus for the Marine Corps and used by them and also the Navy. During WWII bunch of other Campanies including Kabar made the knife. For some reason the Kabar name stuck and that type of Knife became gnerically called a Kabar no matter what comapny made it. Kabar also made a smaller different type of Knife for the Navy. WWII Makers Camillus, Robertson, PAL and of course Kabar. Notice there is no SOLING JAPAN in the WWII makeres. This is not My no-it-all it is from a Collectors Book-US Military Knives Bayonets & Macheteies by the well Respected Athourity H.M. Cole. WWII Knife Blades have that shades of gray Parkerized Finish like the Bayonets and the Leather Handles were Brown and remaind that way util some time in the 1960s when the started using a Black Finish on the Metal and the handles. If you have a Knife and the Metal is finised Black it is not a WWII Knife. Camillus, Utica and Conetta made the after WWII Knives. Sometime in the 1970s onward Onterio Knive was the last maker (Onterio Knive used to be Robertson). This info is can be found on the Internet. There is a lot of copies of the Kabar type knives and People in the Military also buy private purchase Knives from the PX or some place else. As I did when I was in the Army as unlike the Marine Corps the Army in My time did not issue Fighting Knives Seller: ACTUALLY< Kabar was first issued with no protective finish, then after a short time, problems of corrosion, and being too shiny, ( visibility) They began using the coatings, hence the use MARKII. 2nd version. Thers been more prototypes tried during the war, nothing more than the can opener ! Lets see what you do know, what is a kabar having a brown finish ? PLUS, dont put down people on ebay for whatever there methods are, there knowledge or lack of, in the world of collectibles, its always been buyer beware. Buying and selling is nothing more than making money from someone elses ignorance. And if you say you dont participate in that,,,,,,,, lol, your driving down the street and sto at a grage sale of a little old lady seeling her husbands things after he just died of of a heart attack while taking viagra. ( little old lady dont look that bad ) she is selling his things, his randall brand WWII knife for $5.00 as you pick it up she proceeds to tell you how she hated having that thing around for all thses years. NOW, you know where I am going here, do you buy it ? OF COURSE YOU DO,,,,,,,,and as your giving her the 5 dollars, the electric company just pulled up to shut of her electricity. Dear leftie224, As far as baldes with no finish on them all of the Kinfe makers have had examples of that turn up even after they were parkerizing them so that did happen. But, none of what you have mentioned turns your Knife into one that was made in WWII. At first I thought it could have been a lack of knowledge on your part and you were just mistaken but I guess that was not so. Does all of Your displayed knowledge mean you know You purposely are misrepresenting the Knife you are selling? When called on that situation your defense is that other People would take advantage of a sucker so you feel you might as well do it to. I have done bad things in My Life but I don't try to justify them and have always worked hard to make sure the occasional bad or immoral thing does not be come a way of life. What other People do or do not do does not determine My Morality because I have to live with My own Conscience. Do Cheaters/Conmen really prosper? I will never know because I am neither of those. Concerning the Old Lady Example I would certanily feel better later If I had told the Old Lady She had a valuable Collectors Item then if I had bought it; I would feel that that was the right thing to have done. If I had bought it cheap I would always be thinking I had not done the right thing and that would take some of the joy away from owning it. You could also get creative and tell the Old Lady it is valuable and offer to sell it for Her if She would split the Profit after expenses. That could lead to Her having you sell more of Her stuff and telling Her Old Lady Friends and more deals and you could end up a bunch more stuff to sell. I wish eBay had a panel of Experts on Collectables and so on so they could Monitor the Sellers claims. In the 8 Year I have been frequenting eBay they cleaned out or straightned out a lot of those sellers that were grossly screwing the Customers. Perhaps they will eventually get to Collectables and do the same. Seller: ding dong, they do have a panel of experts, and I am on it. Remember ding, you rang my door bell, drunk, but rang it nevertheless.......... or are you the kind of little boy that rings the bell, then runs and hides. You sound like a blatz beer drinker ? whats your brand ? Dear leftie224, They would need Unbiased Experts that care about protecting the Customers; I don't think you would qualify concerning the unbiased part. The above is as far as the argument has gone. To Me it is clear He is trying to sell the 1960s made in Japan (when made in Japan meant cheap) as a rare WWII Knife and knows that He is doing that. I am no expert but used to collect and I hate seeing someone stick this Junk on a less knowledgeable Newbie so I am taking the time to let Him know that some People know better. Off subject but note how the Sellers Argument is similar to many on this forum where lacking facts and avoiding having to answer the Seller choses to try to divert the Issue by name calling. Also is there really such a Beer as Baltz Beer?

eBay seller is a douche, but you have a surplus of time on your hands.
If he's really dishonest and is willing to mislead people, you calling him on it via email probably isn't going to change him. There is a blatz beer, which my iPhone seems to really want to autocorrect to blatz. Though judging by his otherwise horrendous spelling and grammar, who knows what he meant.

I have the same grammar and spelling issue but I tried to make sure I used the spell check before I posted. There is a lot of eBay sellers that know little about what they are selling. So I did not indicate He was lying in the first Post. After that He gradually revealed Himself. So My origial idea was education as I did not no the deception was on purpose. I think that the Seller is dishonest because He claimed to be know what He was talking about so that means He knew His Ad was not correct. He said He believed it was up to the buyer to beware; while always good advice in His case He believes it is License to lie. Note that at the end the Seller wants to believe that there is something wrong with Me. I don't think one contact would change Him but if 100 People took the time to contact Him and tell Him they know what He is doing He might modify at least the Text of His ad. The other Ad that I used in the First Post to the Seller where the Guy Claimed the Knife saw use in Vietnam was at least partly plausible Some Soldiers bring with them or buy their Own Knives so no one could say for certain that the Japanese knives never went to Vietnam. So I don't see that Ad as being OK.

how much value is added by it being ww2 or not? are we talking hundreds of dollars more, or comparable in price to nam era equipment?
i think you are spending too much time describing your reasoning to this guy. just say as a collector you know for a fact the knife is vietnam era, not ww2. dieselpaul is right, nothing you say will change this persons ad, i suppose you could report him to ebay, but whats the point? knife collectors probably will catch the discrepency like you did, he is right in that its buyer beware. this seems similar to all the hilariously described ludicrously overpriced old diesel benzes we constantly see on ebay, which enthusiasts never make the mistake of buying anyway. i once got into a pissing contest with an ebay seller over a filter product that a friend of mine had personally designed. this ebay guy had either bought my friends product and listed it as his own, or had copied it to the exact detail. i was irritated because of the pompous description of scientific testing and development he claimed to have done when the whole damn thing was stolen in the first place. ultimately i had to let it go, but the argument went on like yours is going on. these people will not admit to the lie or theft, not at the point you are at now

I agree that "arguing" is a waste of electrons, but many times I have sent sellers a message pointing out an error in their listings that require more than a casual interest in the item and the sellers have been very receptive and gracious about amending their listing. I

A guy near me once listed a power antenna from a late 50's GM car on ebay. He was asking top dollar since these are very rare.
He got a pretty hot response from a guy who said the antenna was a fraud since it did not look like the one in his shop manual. Well, that could have been. The antenna was pulled from a car in a wrecking yard and the car was 50 years old so perhaps it was a 60's type aftermarket? A bit of research, which was helped along by the responder, determined that GM used three antenna suppliers in 1958 and that one of them was Pioneer Antenna. This company quit making them when it landed a big contract from what became NASA to make antennas for them fancy new space ship thingys that were all the rage. (If you are old enough you will remember Pioneer Antenna was a leading brand of TV antennas. They also made, or at least marketed, a device that would allow you to rotate your TV antenna without leaving your easy chair.) So it turned out that the antenna was made by Pioneer and was even rarer than first thought, and the guy who was so torn up over the false listing wound up buying it. The moral here is: There are a lot of crooks on Ebay, but someone who is honest will always accept the opinions of those that are trying to help. After all, what is more likely? That there is someone who sees an error and hopes to correct it or that there are people who troll Ebay looking for arguments? |

Speaking of fauds . . . this story on Morning Edition was one of those "driveway moments" for me.
Thomas Jefferson's Wine? The saga of the Jefferson bottles begins in 1985 at a wine auction at Christie's in London where they auctioned off a bottle of 1787 Lafite, from one of the finest vineyards in France. "It was a very old bottle inscribed in a spindly hand with 1787, Lafite, and the letters 'Th.J,' " says Keefe. "Christie's said that evidence suggested that this bottle came from a collection of old French wines which had belonged to Thomas Jefferson." |

Some times you simply need to calify things. Years ago I bought a set of Injectors advartized as Rebuilt and you could see in the Pic the Injectors had those Plactic Collars that had NA**X on the indicating they had been rebuilt. What I recieved was a set of used Injectors that had at sometime been rebuilt but in the mean time had been on someones Engine. I was able to send them back at no financial loss. Arguing with an eBay Seller is really no different than arguing on in the Open Discussion section.

The actual Value of that particular Knife is worth what a used Knife mediocre quality Knives without a Sheath would be worth to someone who is going to use if for let use say camping. As a used Knife to use for camping it has about a $15 value because it is not a high quality Knife and with the $5 shipping that makes it kind of expensive. I have a made in Japan Pilot Survival Knife made during that time period as well as some real ones of the same design. The Steel on the Japanese one is too soft to hold an edge long and the construction of the Handle is poor. I kept the Japanese one in My Tool Box for scraping and so on where the poor quality did not make a difference. A Real WWII Knife or Bayonet has Collectors interest so it would cost more. You could buy a Collectors Knife and use it but it would be cheaper to buy a newer Copy and used that.
