Have your agent show the property. That way, the selling agent (who I assume refused you) gets to split her commission.

If you end up buying is, rub the lady's nose in the fact that she's getting 50% of the commission that she would have received had she not been a c.u.next.tuesday that day.

But the thread title claims RACISM. You never addressed that.

Possibly you were perceived as a stranger - and unless it was an open house, it was probably shown by appointment only and it was others not you that made one, so if the agent thought you were trying to get in on the other folks' coat tails, it was alright not to let you in.

That sound reasonable?
For the third or fourth time let me repeat; I was told that; "I'm not comfortable in showing you the property."

The agent's words, not mine.

sounds like the polite version of "pound sand"

whats racist in her comment? is it the word comfortable? how about the word showing?

reality check time, she wanted you to go away. your race is irrelevant

Sorry, I missed that comment when I answered, above.

Some people are hyper sensitive, see EVERYTHING through a racial lens, and that is unfortunate; I don't see a prima facie case of race based on the facts here that I have read so far. Maybe I am wrong though.

And hypothically speaking, *IF* in this case all the parties except YOU were, let's say for instance, African American, and YOU were white, the historical "Oppressor", claiming a "Bakke" or other kind of reverse discrimination, I suspect in these times demanding "Political Correctness", making a big case of this would be a HUGE uphill climb for you.

Just my opinion though.

I showed this to my sister who has been a Realtor for going on 30 years now out in CA. Top producer in her city for years and years. Pres of the realty board. Damn near everyone in town knows who she is. She laughed her butt off at you. First off she is with her clients. She is paying attention to them and them only. She would have offered you her card and told you to call her for an appointment when she was a available.

Racism? Good grief. I'll bet the broker laughs his butt off at you.

LOL! I'm so pissed! I was just preparing to post that very line!

Seriously though, as a black man, Joe must run into real racism more often than many Americans want to admit. Keep your chin up Joe!

Thanks for the expert opinions, Jim.

I kept the case simple here and complete, with none of the irrelevant details. Again - thanks for the perspective.

After the USSC's decision, Bakke v UnivCalDavis circa 1978 - I agree.

And he should oblige her by bringing his own broker and shafting her out of 50% of her commission. Niceness begets niceness, she had her chance.

BTW - when I was in CA, a broker refused to show me a property because "your phone number is from New York and we heard about a guy from New York who was seeing houses to steal drugs from the medicine cabinet." After I had finished repressing a laugh, my response was "if you don't show it to me, my friend who's a broker will." She called back in a few minutes agreeing to show the condo.

I doubt that he sold enough hats on this forum to even afford the DP...

lets say you were looking at a place with your realtor, just how pissed would you be if some random guy attached himself to your scheduled showing and your realtor entertained it at that time?

if someone did that with my realtor when i was looking at a place, id probably tell the guy to get lost if he persisted, and later fire my realtor. i doubt you would act differently. sounds to me like this woman was really polite to ol' joe.

she could have given him her card sure, but even that would be weird in front of just the wrong client and taking into account the presumption of the guy trying to get in there anyway. for all she knows joe was the local whackjob.

I wouldn't actually care -- until I have a signed contract, realtor can show to whomever s/he/it wants. I don't expect to be the only interested party.

I'm looking at the house not the broker. If the realtor wants to yap and gush at someone else while I'm doing so, so much the better.

here is where our confusion lies. im of the opinion that its certain this woman was a buyers agent showing a house to her clients from her reaction to joe. secondly the woman is not a representative of the agency joe then called on the sale sign, but some other real estate company, making it even more likely.

you are thinking its the sellers agent. the sellers agent would be there if it were an open house, but not necessarily if another agent were showing the house for his/her clients.

nothing in joes story indicates it was an open house, just that some people were being let in and he wanted to join.
what happened here is joe tried to jump a private showing and doesnt appear to get why it didnt happen, so its gotta be racism.

In addition, those prospective buyers may have been previously screened to ensure that they can either qualify for a mortgage or have the wherewithal to buy the place outright. If so, the realtor may have believed that it was more productive to invest her time with those clients. I have no doubt that realtors could waste a lot a time with financially unqualified lookieloos in absence of such screening.

I've never had a broker ask for bank statements or pre-qual before showing a property. Not really appropriate to do so unless one is actually writing an offer.
