These guys reinvented the auto advice show. It is rare to see an original act in show business, and rarer still to have an act that no one can copy.

He made a lot of people smile.

I'm a little skeptical about diagnosis over the radio waves. I mean, Frasier was good for a laugh but how do you diagnose a car problem on the radio?

I don't listen to NPR because of their slant so I can't be sure how the radio show really is but I have read a couple of columns with their names on it. Seems like pretty simple issues they had to diagnose but we never will know the outcome.

It wasn't really a diagnostic show. It was a comedy show.

Dear god I hope no one listened to them for automotive advice. That was a comedy show with an automotive theme.

We have a couple of automotive shows that air here. I listen to both from time to time. As mentioned, Car Talk is a comedy show first, not to be taken seriously for car repair information. The other one is meant as an actual call in auto repair show, but even then, despite having some good techs, it's still a large amount of guessing. You just can't do most of this type of work over the phone. Especially since so many of the customers/callers are so poorly versed in the subject matter they're trying to discuss.

Still, sad to hear about Tom.

Ok. Seems like they were giving car advice in the columns but I never listened to their show so IDK. Wife gets people asking for medical advice over the phone too and she tells them she can't do diagnostics over the phone. General stuff, sure. Don't smoke, don't overeat, don't drink Draino, etc but the rest, "I need to see you and run labs" is her answer.

I have to say that they were funny in their own way. Ann Landers was a little more serious on the other end.

He and his Brother Ray made me laugh so hard I rear ended a Tree Hugger in a old Volvo one afternoon in Bennington, Vermont.

RIP, great NPR tradition. And, once you cut through the funny stuff, they knew their stuff about cars.
