Mission to a Comet
Preparing for a comet landing - The Washington Post
Landing tomorrow. Here's an article about the "scale" http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-11-11/we-ve-landed-arrowhead-stadium-on-the-surface-of-a-comet-.html |

"Touchdown! My new address: 67P!" Later, it tweeted again: "I'm on the surface but my harpoons did not fire."

Well. At least their engineers weren't flumoxed by the metric system.

I watched the landing. Very cool. I think they are contemplating using some feature of the lander to get it to move again. It bounced off a couple of times due to the extremely low gravity before settling into position. It would be wild to be sitting on that comet and thinking, "when i stand up, I can't exert myself too much or I might fly off into space."

Makes one want to fire up their old "Lunar Lander" games . . . on BASIC.

Very cool and kudos to the team.
Some spoilsports are now griping that the chief engineer showed up at a presser in a Hawaiian shirt with PVC-clad women on it. (Apparently designed by the wife of his tat artist.) Must be jealous that he's actually doing real science that their liberal arts brains fail to comprehend. |
