Eek, blow out obviously. I wonder what flew by right in the beginning though? Maybe the bearing seized. At least this guy seemed to be towing within capacity.

Anyone got any explanation as to why it veers left right away?

I'd have to say driver error.

You can see the brake lights come on but that seems to happen after it veers left. I thought it veered left too quickly to be initiated by the driver as a result of the blowout. I thought the first thing the driver did was hit the brakes after it veered left. Brakes on the Bronco seem to be locked up at the end. Good thing or it might have continued over into the right lane.

Old trailer, old truck, nothing probably in good shape, throw in some speed and that's what you get.

I suppose that's one advantage of my Gwagens lack of power. I can only tow my trailer at 60mph...downhill

Good thing it didn't happen 15 seconds earlier when he was between the Kia and the semi. It could've been so much worse.

Actually hitting the brakes may have been the worst thing to do. That may have caused the accident. Holding the wheel straight and just easing off the gas is what I would have done.

My guess was startled over-correction by the driver followed by the brakes when they felt the $h!t hitting the fan.

I agree with your technique as it applies to blowouts on wheels other than the front ones. But once he was totally out of control and heading across the lanes, the fact that he locked the brakes probably saved him from a nastier accident. If there weren't brakes on the trailer, the fact that he hit the brakes on the truck probably explains the jackknife.

Yes, quite possible.

It all comes back to a high center of gravity, short wheelbase inherently unstable towing device. Everything is exaggerated. They were very lucky not to have rolled the truck and of course lucky to not go into the other lane as well.

Yes, wheel comes off trailer causing drag, which pushes the hitch to the right, making the bronco veer left, then startled over correction while applying brakes creates the perfect storm of all the wrong things to do in this case.

If you have an unstable trailer it can be corrected by applying the trailer brakes if it has any. If an unbraked trailer you have to hold on and coast your speed down.

...very lucky the bronco stayed upright.
