How many amps does an electric AC compressor draw, such as the one in a Prius?

Sorry I can't answer your question. I never thought about it before, but now that you ask the question, I guess that it would have a compressor with its own drive motor.
I'm interested in seeing what you find out. Vs tech might know the answer. Also come to think about it, in the Prius it probably runs on something other than 12 volts which of course will effect the current draw.

The first generation Prius has a belt driven compressor so the engine has to run if you want AC. From the second generation, it's an electric compressor, at least at the start, that attaches to the block! The orange wrap might mean it's not a 12V system -

I know virtually nothing about the Prius, but I fully expect that it has something like a36 or48 volt system. That said, if the cable you point out is the AC compressor cable, that would be more in line with a 12volt compressor.

AC compressor questions | PriusChat
~200 volts, 3 phase, variable frequency A.C. The cable is likely encased in a thick conduit to prevent damage which accounts for the thickness of the damn thing. Further searching indicates that later cars might use a 277V compressor instead. |
