From the "Rules are Rules Dept"

Principal forces student with Down syndrome to remove high school letter jacket | For The Win

“We have considered it, and our decision was no. We decided that it is not appropriate in our situation because it is not a varsity level competition.”

The only way I can explain that is that some people have a mean streak.

That they are in such positions of dictatorial authority is a travesty.

I'm speechless.

What's the harm?

I've got two kids with varsity letters and the letters have never seen the light of day. Something tells me his schoolmates don't have an issue with it.

Sounds like the principal was a jock and peaked in HS.

Here is my opinion from another person with Autism Spectrum Disorder: rules apply to everyone, even those who are special. We deserve no special treatment, as we have no right and will not be given to us. I am most likely have to change majors because the University refuses to work with my condition, so that's how I learned that they don't give special treatment. We are just another brick in the wall.

I was in special education until Middle School, and we were expected to follow the rules just like the rest. So, being special means nothing.

In High School, I wanted to wear a hat because I have light sensitivity due to having Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, I was told no hats were allowed. So, I didn't wear a hat again.

Why are you speechless? Is he on a Varsity team? Is he to be treated "special"? Isn't the current trend to NOT treat those any differently?

That's baloney. Light sensitivity is a MEDICAL issue, not a preference.
I know people who wear dark glasses all the time to avoid damage to their optic nerve.
Is CONFORMITY that important?

If the previous director gave letters to the special needs kids who deserved them, fine. If someone is afraid that the varsity letter's value is somehow diminished, then make the letter slightly different, to recognize a different kind of athlete.

Sometimes I think some of these people have the intelligence of a lizard, they operate on instinct without thinking, to keep "order"without really understanding what order is.

Strelnik, it may be baloney, but it is also life. Just because you have a medical condition means nothing, especially if the A.D.A. doesn't recognize it.

I like your idea! Only concern be that it differentiates, and might cause them to become targets. I know from experience those who have a condition make them a target because of bing different.

What do you suggest? Anyone who wishes get a letter? Did you wish for a letter but didn't get one? I earned a letter in high school- a manager's letter. I was the varsity cross country "manager". I had little chance to make the varsity squad because in my three year high school I graduated in two years so in my second year I knew I would not make the team. My letter was slightly different than the varsity letter. Give the kid a slightly different letter. Your life view is that everyone deserves everything when they don't complete the steps needed to earn the reward. Chavez, Castro and Stalin are your compassion models.

It's all very clear now. You, having earned a quasi-letter for some peripheral association with your high school cross-country team, are jealous of a kid afflicted with Down's Syndrome for having received the varsity letter which you coveted so long ago. You couldn't get a varsity letter - why should he?
